Here's the deal

Ok, here it is...
About a mounth ago, I decided to restore my dads 1949 f1 panel truck without him knowing and then give it to him as a christmas present. Biggest problem is it has not run since the 70s. Oil was all slugged up so I was told to drain it and put disel in it to break up the slugg. It worked. Now the problem is I had it completly drain and I went to put oil in it and after 3 quarts, the dip stick was at the full mark. It is a flathead 6 so I was told it should take 4.5 to 5 quarts. Any ideas??

Thanks
Nick

Have you run it at all since you put new oil in? If it was totally drained the oil isn't everywhere it will go inside. Also make sure you check it hot, but not running.

It has not been run at all. What I was think was when I drained it I just took out the drain plug. So maybe there is some slugg on the oil pan that is causeing a false reading???

was that amount given with or without the filter change. you need to prime the system and get oil in the filter to check it.

Well....first off, welcome to the forum. I have to say that is a cool thing to do for your dad!!

It is possible that you have some sludge backing things up a little. You should crank the engine through a few revolutions and re-check the oil. Did you get a lot of goo out with the diesel??

I put a new filter on and put half a quart of oil in that compartment.

I turned the enginge over by hand a few times and the dip stick read the same. And yes I did get a little goo out with the dissel.

Pull the coil wire off of the distributor and spin it over a few cycles. build the pressure up a couple times. turning over by hand is not going to get oil to the top of the engine.

Does the oil pan have the typical truck drop-out section around the drain hole? (6 bolts in a circle) If so, drop that down and see if sludge is completely plugging the oil from draining. I don't know that I'd crank the engine until you find out if the intake is full of crap.

With a bypass filter, there's no benefit to filling the canister, it will just drain to the oil pan.

Welcome Aboard Nick! Let's see pics of that Panel when you get a chance. What work do you plan to get done on it by Christmas?

I know your flat six has the larger drain cover like Ross mentioned. It's a really good idea to pull this cover. It's there so you can pull off the oil pick up screen and clean it out. I'd bet it's pretty clogged up.

When I first got my F-1 with the flathead, the engine was stuck. I got it freed up and changed the oil. I ran it for a few days and went to change the oil again. Not one single drop came out of the hole when I removed the plug because of all the sludge that had migrated down after it was driven. I had to poke a hole through the sludge to get it to drain any at all. The above advice is correct, take the cover off. You'll probably be amazed at what you find.

It seems awkward, but whenever you "insert a picture" to one of these threads, the forum is looking for the picture somewhere on the web (which is always available) rather than from somewhere on your hard drive (which isn't always available).

While you're making a post on FTE, select the pic you want to post from your Photobucket album. When the large version of the pic is open, right mouse click on it and select "View Image Info". The image info will be highlighted and will look something like this:
http://i285.photobucket.com/albums/l...ghtsafter1.jpg

Copy that highlighted info (right click / copy).

When you have the spot in your post where you want the pic to be placed, select the "Insert Image" icon at the top of the post (looks like a mountain) and paste (right click / paste) the image info you copied in the highlighted box (just shows "http://" when it opens).

Your pic will be placed in the post.

Hope that helps.

Ok...
I was able to get the oil pan out and you guys were right, the bottom was covered in slugg. Clean it all out and here is the next question... Will this stuff, Permatex/3 oz. tube Form-A-Gasket no. 2 sealant (80016) | Gasket Sealant | AutoZone.com_, work as the gasket for the oil pan? It says it will but I'm not sure. The other question is it says that it resists Gasoline, Oil, Kerosene ....... So will this work for my carborator because I took it apart the other day and reliezed there are no gaskets for it.

Why not just buy gaskets? A pan gasket set is less than $15.
EDIT: Dennis Carpenter has the oil pan gasket set for $20

I wouldn't use anything on the carburetor but a gasket set. There are too many little holes that wouldn't like even a small drop of that stuff to get in them. It would be too easy to ruin the carb.
