Airbag light oddity...

OK...read all the past that I could find with nothing referencing my issue on my '00 SD 4X4 with 153,500 miles.

Do the normal wait to start....all lights cycle as normal....just happens that most dash indicators do their system check at about the same time the wait to start light runs.....start the truck and all is well except the airbag light on the inst. cluster....flashes 27. The history here shows that to be an indication that the passenger air bad off light is not working...but mine is.

Now...the oddity. The passenger light cycles while waiting to start....turn key to start and light recycles....and I get the flashing on my side. If I do not do the wait to start time or the wait to start light cycles before the resart of the dash lights do their checks, I get no airbag light except the normal system check type.

Watching the pass. light under both start types, the light is bright every time. Also, it works good when shutting off the pass. air bag.

No other indications of issues anywhere.

Makes me go .....

Have you pulled the switch to verify that all the solder connections are good on the small board?

27 is not the code for the light being out only. To my understanding its to that unit in general. There could be other issues with that airbag switch you need to look into. Just open it up and double check all the solder like meantioned above.

This may help, it's to replace the lamp, but should help some.

Yea mine was giving the same code and talking on here and another forum is where I found out about it. Supposedly to my understanding and how it was explained to me was that its that entire unit. If you take it to a dealership and see that code there going to replace the entire plug unit there. Thats where they ended up telling me about the light being out issue was a common problem, and luckly thats what mine was.

Does you cruise control work/horn work? Back in 94 I think 27 usually was clock spring. wouldn't be a huge suprise if they changed it by now. Just throwing it out there.

Yes, cruise and horn work. Everything I read indicates a bad bulb but mine works and is bright....found one post somewhere that had my issue but no answer as to resolution. Hope to open things up soon.

I think it depends on the problem if there is a cruise/horn issue too.

My old 94 had a code 27. It started with the airbag light flashing then within a few weeks the horn and cruise would kick out then stopped working all together. That told me it was the clock spring, replaced it no problems until the day I sold it. On these newer ones with the next generation airbag I am not sure what code is what. It sounds like the disable light issue but with the light workig????? Maybe there is different issue with the switch? IS the dealer the only place that can pull airbag codes?

Well....after doing nothing....and two days of all kinds of running around town, the airbag system seems to be doing fine. No lights at all....and I am leaving it alone.

An update......it failed again....

Pulled the unit out and checked all solder joints. Everything checks good both visually and with a meter. Very difficult to get the light NOT to work when applying direct power out of the truck.

Hooked up the board out of the mounting box and all tested good several times...including the off setting. Power to the light is solid. Even tapped the board and wiggled the connection with nothing showing bad.

Installed it properly and......yep.....no light. Tapped the panel and it works.....but not every time after that..... As long as I watch and tap the panel lightly if it does not light, it will work...

Moving the harness made no difference.

Seems there is a loose/poor connection to the light but dang if I can find it.....until next time.

Well....light worked good for a few more days....then out.

Took it out again.....just replaced the bulb and all is well.

Played with the bulb some as it still worked...I could see the filament when it was lit and there was a break....and it took a fairly hard tap to separate it, and another tap would bring it back......
