cluster instrument panel temp display needle
My 1996 club wagon 170,000.miles cluster instrument panel temp display needle goes all the way to red and past. The engine is not overheating. Drove 500 miles no problem. Mechanic measured temperature and it was normal. He also used an infra-red temperature measuring instrument and aimed it at the base of the sending unit and measured temperature in the normal range. He suggested I have a problem with the cluster in the instrument panel. I am considering checking and cleaning all ground points, but I do not know where they are. Has anyone had a similar problem. all other displays in the cluster are behaving normal.

I had an issue on my 95 where the temp gauge would read high also. I didn't like the way it was starting when hot and since my starter was 17 years old I replaced it and oddly enough the temp gauge went back to normal. But you may have a bad ground.
