Cam Position Sensor Question

Alright I've had the CMP problem before where it was dying on me, and I learned to check the tach, if it wasn't bouncing a little when you were cranking on the motor it was probably that.

So now I have a 97 F-350. This thing served a purpose, then it's went to crap.

New GP, GPR, Turbo, HPOP, batteries.

So this summer the gf was using it to pull a small bumper pull trailer with her horse, it died on her but she got it running fairly soon. This was about a 80 degree day. I asked her if the tach was bouncing and she said it was.

So then my buddy was borrowing my 08 to move and I was driving this. It was like 95 degrees out, let it warm up for a bit so the smoke screen finally dies off, take it out on the road and gun it to get to speed (40mph) and it dies, luckily I coast it off the road. I try cranking, no start, there's a little bounce to the tach. Checking wires under the hood, finally after about 2o minutes it fires off. I go off down the road and make it farther, don't gun it, make it about 4 miles, cruising about 55 and it dies, again coast off the road, wiggling wires again and everything, half hour has gone by, nothing, gf comes and picks me up takes me home, buddy gets off work, gets me in my 08, go to get this thing, and I push it back to the storage yard. Would not start the whole time. After about 3 hours of it dying.

Go out a couple days later just for the hell of it, it fires right up.

Read on here and other places that the IPR when it's hot out and the oil gets really hot if it's failing it can cause it to die.

So just kinda ignore this thing, start it up and run it every so often. It was cooler, like 60s a few weeks back, started it, let it run for about 15 minutes, took it around the yard just really rodding on it trying to get it to die, do this for about a half hour, can not get it to die.

Today I start it to move it, fires up, after about a half a minute it dies on me, crank on it, tach doesn't move. So now I know I need a CMP.

So my question after all of that is, could the CMP be causing the previous problems even though the tach was still reading? Basically wondering if I should get my hopes up that this one is a simple cheap fix for once. I'm trying to get a guy with a decent scanner to come scan this thing. Ford wants to charge me for scanning this, small shops want me to make an appointment and even if I make an appointment to get it scanned and get an estimate, they want me to drop it off cause they don't know when they will get to it (what's the point of an appointment then?).

That's a normal CMP issue
