My A/C pulley is turning/recharging or something while my heat is on. Heat still comes out but when sitting and idling the unit keeps starting and stopping making a whinding type noise. I lifted the hood to check it out and compared it with the diagram above the bumper and it looks to me like the A/C pulley. Anyone have any suggestions. Scheduled for the Ford dealer tomorrow but would like to save some money if possible. Great site thanks for any help.
IIRC, the only time that the AC compressor is not running, is when the function selector is in the vent or off positions. In all other function positions it is running. In cold weather conditions however it will be doing very little cooling because of the ambient conditions. This keeps the seals in the system in good condition.
As per YOUR owner's manual, the compressor runs in all positions EXCEPT OFF, VENT, and FLOOR.
Please read the manual.
Rapid cycling of the compressor is usually a sign of a low charge. A whining noise from the compressor is usually a sign of a faulty bearing or internal compressor failure.
your compressor has an electric clutch, when power is applied it latches. You need to look at the very center of the compressor pulley to see if its actually spinning or not. also you should be able to hear it and see it clicking on and off. And yes if its not super cold the compressor will run in the defrost mode, and even if you have the heat on if thats what you want.
Thanks guys. It seems to be noisier or maybe I am paying more attention to it now than before. It could be that my bearing are starting to go. Yes, I did look at it and the center is spinning.
I cancelled my appointment soon after the first reply so thanks again.
