So I have a few questions about stacks .... I'm looking at the possibility of putting a stack on my truck. It is a 2001 so there is no cat on the factory system, so the only thing the stack is missing is a muffler, is this something I can add as to avoid the LAW? Also, I pull a weekend warrior 3-5 times per year as of now but it could turn into a few more times down the road. Would the stack lead to exhaust getting on the front of the trailer? It will be getting some power mods next year to make pulling the trailer easier .... Don't know if that means it will start to make black smoke or not .... I live in CA so that is why I bring up the muffler question. Thanks in advance guys!
I'm not sure about the muffler, but most stacks I've seen appear to use the same diameter pipe that heavy duty trucks do, so I'd be willing to bet one of those mufflers would fit. Of course that would make the muffler serve as the stack, which probably wouldn't be aesthetically pleasing. Furthermore heavy duty mufflers are designed for the acoustic resonance of a large six-cylinder diesel and they may not be effective on a smaller Powerstroke.
Also you'd be placing your exhaust directly in front of the trailer, and therefore there's no way you wouldn't get more soot on the trailer. While some tuners burn relatively clean, the majority of those that make more power will produce more smoke than stock.
I'll withhold my personal opinion on stacks on a pickup truck, but I'm glad to see you're thinking this through. We see some threads where folks delete their DPF and catalytic converter only to have to buy another one when their truck fails inspection.
I try to think things out as best as I can before I make a decision .... The thought of a stack was also because if it exits out the side I could get smoke down the side of the trailer. So it was also like a which would be the least detrimental to the trailer kind of thing .... My only other objection to the stack is it is going to take away some of my visibility when backing up. Don't think there are any laws against it here. Just makes it a little different from the other trucks around here
They make mufflers that fit inside the pipes leading to the stack(s), I had one, didn't make much difference. I have a new truck now and I long for stacks, I just love them, not sure why, probably not going to run them on this truck though.
