So first of all... My NC safety inspection passed everything except for one thing... My exhaust. They don't do any emissions testing on diesels here (at least not older than '07) but they failed me because I don't have a muffler!
They don't care that the cat is gone, but won't pass me because of the muffler... So I'm gonna stick a 4" glasspack on it and get it re-inspected.
And my question...
Will a replacement 4" tailpipe from a '99 Superduty fit OBS trucks?
From in front of the rear axle, over the axle and out the side? I'd think it would be pretty close.
Just wondering because the tailpipe for a '99 is half the price of one for a '95. I know the intermediate pipes are different but what about tailpipes?
I thought about it, but I want to put the exhaust back in the stock location, just 4". And I found a 4" glasspack that's only 12 inches long so it's basically the least muffler like muffler I can get and shouldn't hurt my flow at all so I'm just going to run that.
I'm going to get the Magnaflow intermediate pipe, Stainless for $80.
The Magnaflow tail pipe section is $110 Stainless, but I can get one for a SD for $60. So just wondering if it'll fit and if the bends are the same.
I used to be a muffler man in a previous life,LOL. Most trucks are similar enough with a good amount of room over the axle. I would go to a muffler shop near you and see what they say. I never worked on a SD so I do not know what it looks like.
Mine is going to be not very pretty after the winter here. =*(
Its all nice right now, but is going to turn to ****.
I guess its not to big a deal though. Its a nice 1 piece from the DP. But the coupler to take it from 3 to 3 1/2 sucks.
I adjusted it and I think its holding tight now. It was moving up and down on it. haha. I was wondering why it was resting on the trans cross member and they had put rubber on it with a zip tie.
Needs more tie downs in there.
They bent the rear exit the strangest way i've ever seen also. I should take a picture of it.
It will stay on there till TJBeggs and I figure out a way to get my dream exhaust on the truck.
Yeah... the sidepipes are a cool idea... It would have to bend back around towards the front of the truck and go either over or under the t-case or driveshaft and then have another sharp bend to go back along the sides. I saw a Dodge Cummins with 4" sidepipes once, not sure how they ran it.
Or just do something totally crazy like backwards side pipes!!! Have run to just in front of the rear wheels on both sides and then go back towards the front exiting just behind the front tires! lol
I figured out a way under the truck a while ago. I forgot what it is now.
Might do a y-pipe sorta deal and throw the 4 to a few 2's or 3's
Takes like 3 9's to flow 5 inches or something.
The other thing that TJ suggested was to make most of the pipe be for looks or for steps. And just have it connect somewhere convenient towards the back of the pipe.
I'll just have them ceramic'd or something.
This is more dreaming then anything though really.
Falcon, what I meant is if they have the replacement tailpipes for both trucks, you could set them side by side and have a pretty good idea if the SD pipe would fit before you buy it.

That's a good idea. Only thing is I was looking at them at summitracing.com so all I have is pictures right now. I'd rather have all Stainless though. Worth the extra $50.
Got my 4" Glasspack today! Only 12" long overall. Shouldn't hurt my flow at all and it IS a "muffler" so the inspection should pass now.
Well I know here in CO, and I believe in Texas... A turbo is classified as an exhaust muffler as well... That is how we can get away with a no mufflered turboed diesel...
And I can get away with no cat too, because my truck is registered as the Cabin truck... which it sees the cabin more than our other truck.
You could do the old trick we used to do on custom street racers and get your glass pack and fill it with gasoline and and light it roll it back and forth get it glowing red hot, that causes the glass inside to be super heated as well, as soon as the fire goes out.
1. pick it up, and throwit down as hard as you can
2. stick the garden hose in it flooding it with super cold water.
The effect is you should hear a large crack, or lots of smaller ones. either way the glass is super heated and wil break from the vibration of being slammed to the ground or from the water hitting the hot glass. It will effectively destroy the muffler, thus creating a muffler shaped pipe. That and its not uncommon to to see sparkly smoke for a while as the glass is blown out. Depending on your exhaust pressure the muffler will still have a muffling efect til enough of the flass has been blown out. Simply throw a fresh coat of paint back on it, and install. Looks new but does very little.
