Getting a chirping noise coming from (i think) the bell housing. a few small chirps at start up, then constant after about 1300rpm, eventually gets high enough and drowns out behind the exhaust that i cant hear it.
Possible flywheel issue?
I've uploaded a video to try and illustrate the issue.
1996 ford explorer XLT 4.0.
Just replaced starter a few weeks ago, but this problem was happening before. I dont know if it was as prominent and got worse, or if im just now noticing it and focusing on it.
I dont know why the video ended up being so wonkey, but the noise is really what i needed y'all to hear. It seems like the videos silent until 10 seconds
I've heard that the flywheel can crack around the bolts.
When i did my engine rebuild, i dont think i removed the bolts off the flywheel, so i doubt they arent torqued down correctly. not so worried about that unless they can just randomly come loose.
If i was to pull the starter off and peak in there to see if i can find a crack around the bolts, i'm guessing thats going to be difficult to see... and theres no way in !@#$ im pulling the engine again just to look at the fly wheel. is there some trick to testing for cracks? like with a saw blade, flicking it and listening for the ring?
Well i read some horrifying testimony about pcv valves or oil breathers that werent functioning correctly and causing oil pressure to allow air to get through the rear seal which may also cause an oil leak. i saw a slight drip today when taking the video...
Its not an exhaust leak. Took another look at the flywheel through the starter hole and inspected it as well as i could, no cracks, no signs of anything. I'm planning to take it to the shop to get the Camshaft Synchronizer replaced, as i've heard those will make a squeaking noise. one shop told me that they have to use a scan tool to line everything up correctly. If i was to WANT to do this, is it feasible?
