In a 1991 ford explorer you have a dimmer wire an illumination wire and a car chassy ground wire all orange which wires need to be hooked up and which wires need to be taped up. the reason i ask is because my dash nolonger lights up. This maddness must end. Too many fuses have lost thier lives due to this question.

I had that same problem w/ my Ranger. I didn't have the orange wires in my Tempo. When I put my stereo in my Ranger, I stupidly connected the two orange wires together instaad of capping each individually. That resulted in a blown fuse of my dash lights and rear tail lights.
Most aftermarket stereos do not use that dimmer wire. Simply cap off each orange wire and replace your fuse.
