ok, this is an odd one, but i'm trading my 2001 z-28 and i want to swap the radio into my 85 f-250. i know i'll have to eliminate some things such as the speed variable volume controls, the steering wheel mounted radio controls, the auto dimmer on the display, but i think its possible.
i want to do this b/c it different, and i dont like how most after market ones now look like a techni-color cartoon. the first person who can explain to me what wire is what on the back of the monsoon unit can have my lx tape deck out of my truck. who knows, you may want it for restoration purposes. i think it still works. i dunno though, i havnt owned a tape since jr high. but the radio is ok.
think hard. i want color codes, and all, so i know what to rigg and what to eliminate.
Only advice I can give is find a copy of the audio system wiring diagram for both the chey and the ford. It will be different, not impossible, but will the work be worth it? It's your truck, so build it the way you want it and good luck.
i want my monsoon head unit, factory in a z-28, swapped in to my ford f-250. the ford is an 85 model so the wiring there is no big deal. but on the unit from the camero, theres the tie ins for the speed variable volume and the steering wheel controls, and all that.
the chevy dealership couldnt even get a wireing diagram for it. they said when the have a problem witha headunit, they throw it away and plug in another. i'm just gonna take a car battery, two speakers and my meter and start experimenting till i get it or somthiing burns up.
I have a picture of a Ford Wiring Diagram and a Chevy Diagram that both are probably what you will be working with just correspond between both and the hardest part will probably be mounting it.
There is a very asy way to get the wiring right on that install.
1. go to your nearest car audio dealer and get a metra 71-1858 (this will plug into the factory GM radio)
2. also get the correct harness for you ford system I cant give you the number as they can use 3 or 4 differant ones depending on the stereo option that was installed but start with the 70-1770
after you get these its as simple as matching the colors and plugging them in
The only problem you might run into is that the Monsoon system has amps through out the car and the f series may not. But if it has the factory amp you should be ok. The monsoon head unit will not have enough power to drive speakers
