i've got an 89 F-350 with a 351w with 179,000 original miles. the valve covers, oil pan gasket, possible main bearing seals are leaking oil not serious yet but i need to get it straightened out. im also a dairy farmer and time is an asset i dont have a lot of. should i save up some money and do the work myself, or send it to a garage? if i do the work myself what would take a week would take a week of sundays...thats 7 weeks lol and alot of down time for the truck, on the other hand if i send it out im sure labor alone is gonna be costly...any advice or comments would be great, thanx
I know its 4-8 hours on oil pan /pump / gasket.. valve covers wouldn't take long except for the passengers side with the intake plenum removal.. id say 1-2 hours on that side.. rear main makes sense to have a shop do it .. but you can do it yourself in 2-4 hours.. so.. let's say about
80 $ hour labor x about 14 or 15 hours.. hm.. make sense to dyi for $1200.. since the parts cost less than $400
hey thank you the oil pans got me a lil nervous because of the cross member of frame, the motors gotta go up a couple inches for the pan to even move cuz it runs right behind the sump, maybe its in front the sump lol i no it cant go backwards because the tranny is in the way n wont go forward cuz of clearances, but am i goin to have any issues with fuel lines or wiring harnesses if i take it up? if there are going to be issues would it make as much sense to pull the motor and put it on a stand? just kind of running through my options ive never really had everything start leaking at once lol

it makes sense to pull the motor for about 2-3 hours labor.. regasket it and throw it back inin.. you'll be out there a few hours for gaskets and the oil pump.... check the mains and crank if you pull the whole motor.. I could do it in a saturday
But you will not have a problem with clearance.. you raise the motor until the intake hits the firewall
I had a "new" engine (60,000 original on it) put into my truck earlier this year when the old one went out, had blown piston rings. Before the piston rings went out, I was going to have all the oil leaks fixed on it, Rear main, oil pan, and valve covers. Shop wanted something like $1400 to do all the work.
Then piston rings went out and so they just swapped a new engine and and re-did all gaskets, new oil pan, etc. before it went into mine.
There is a good chance that the PCV system is not working properly which could be the cause of some of the leaks. Replace the valve and check the hose.
