I have an 89 ford f-250 4x4 with the 351w. ok yesterday i went to replace the oil pan. I followed all the instructions in the haynes mauel. removed intake, unbolted motor mounts, unbolted pan, and the pickup tube. The motor is jacked up as far as it can go also. i even jacked up the trans for extra room. It seems that with all that I still can't get it aound the oil pump. Because it is supposed to come out the rear right? I evan tried to pull it out the frone and I rotated the crank to try and get it to clear and it still won't come out. So please help because I am ready to lose my mind over this one.
Anytime I've ever taken the oil pan off one of these trucks, I just unbolted the oil pump and dropped it in the pan. That's the easy part. Putting it back on is the hard part. Now that I'm older and have a fully equipped shop, if I ever have to pull another one, the engine is just coming out. You have to take it half way out anyways - you might as well just finish the job and save getting a bunch of dirt in your eyes and scaring the wife and kids with the cursing and wrench throwing fits.
Hello
I just completed this job yesterday and agree that it would have been easier to pull the motor. The only advice I have is to pull the distributor and put the oil pump drive in after the oil pump is back in.
I have the 460 gas engine.
What a job. I hope it does not leak but I think I can change the gasket next time without taking off the pump.
