Ok so i am needing some advice here. I "think" something is wrong with my tranny or driveshaft but my only symptom is a sound. While at highway speeds (50mph and higher I hear a distinctive loud whining. Sort of like a mix of humming and whining. The faster i go the higher pitched it is. I only hear it thru my rear window amd it seems to be coming up from betwern the bed and cab. The truck shifts just fine so i'm not sure what this could be. The transmision guy at my work thinks it may be the pump but untill we have time to get together and look at it we are stuck with ideas only. Btw our tranny guy specialozes in the c4 transmission. We build extreme heavey capacity pulling tractors and use soley the c4 transmissions modified with stronger gears and adapter plates to fit about 15 different motors we use. What are some things i can do to check short of removing the entire transmission. Like i said it drives and shifts fine, I just don't feel like having a catastrophic failure at some random time.
The truck is a 1986 f150 lariat 302 efi AOD tranny. 2wd
several months ago my rig developed a similar noise, except that it was dependent on throttle as well as speed. it was intense enough that i decided to wear earplugs until i got it sorted out. the problem was a broken pinion gear in the rear axle. it had one tooth over half missing, the next 2 teeth able to wobble freely, and a fourth tooth had a crack resembling that around the 2 that could wobble. it howled like hell but gave no other symptoms.
i would suggest pulling the cover off the rear axle to look around. at worst, you waste an hour and $10, with the benefit of changing the axle fluid which is probably past due anyway. at best, you find your problem. if no problems arise there, you know to get into the tranny itself.
