What is the best way to clean up the grille on my 70 F-350. Is it stainless, chrome, annodized? I do know that the 2 center parts can be taken out. Are they chromed or were they painted argent? A nice silver color would be easy to spray on...
Should be anodized. Depending on how bad it is it could be cleaned up without stripping it doen and polishing. on my '68 I tooke fine steel wool and some good aluminum police and went at it. Didn't scar it up and it turned out great, but it was a nice piece to start with.
the 1970's have "egg crate" inserts that are held on by 4 screw each. Are these painted. It would be easy to take them out and paint them a silver argent. What do you think?

They look the same, but looks can be deceiving. 1970 anodized aluminum grille frame is 1970 only .. not the same as 1971/72. 1970: The egg crate aka checkerboard plastic grille inserts are the same right/left.
1971/72's use a different frame as the plastic grille inserts are specific to right or left. These R & L grille inserts cannot be installed in a 1970 grille frame, as the '70's mounting tabs are different.
Anodized coating protects the aluminum from corroding. Anodizing fades over time, so some peeps strip it off, polish the bare aluminum.
But you have to keep on polishing it...and polishing it...and polishing it...ad nauseum, or the aluminum will turn grey and begin to corrode within a short time.
Once the anodizing has faded, there is no way to restore it to its original luster. The only "correct" way is to have the frame re-anodized.
