I went to start up my rebuild today and it fired and rumbled to a stop. I primed the carb again and attempted to fire it again. It rumbled and there was a terrible grinding down by the starter. Great, I'm thinking, I didn't get the torque converter in all the way. I was sure I had it right taking all the measurements. I took a look under her at the torque converter ( I left the small plate off) and the starter wheel was still engaged in the flywheel. Looked to have ground pretty good as there was some metal fillings around the flywheel. Here's the deal. I rebuilt a 68 360 into a 390. I took a C6 out of a 73 and put it behind the 390. I took the starter from the 73 (105 block). Is this starter a problem.
I want to get some thoughts before I pull it.
I went through 5 starters before I got one that sounded normal. The other ones would stay engaged sometimes and make horrible grinding noises on startup.
Horrible is right! Not what I need breaking a engine in. I must be missing something though. This starter worked fine in the 73 with the same C6. Is it just not lining up right?
Check the teeth on the starter gear. The flex plate has a lot more, so it's not as likely torn up.
If the gear teeth are a mess, get another starter, make sure the starter bolts are snug and the starter looks lined up.
Next possibility. Have you actually driven since the reinstall? If not, you may have not got the torque converter all the way installed. I did this, and mine would not turn over via the solenoid. I had to place the starter wire straight to the battery +, not realizing that I was destroying the tranny. When I finally got the engine running, the truck would not drive. one expensive rebuild later and a lot of my time, and I was running. I hope that's not your issue.
Ya, grinding up the pump gear was my first thought when I heard the grinding. I measured about ten times when I installed the C6 and I put the engine and tranny in as one piece. I checked it this morning and like I said, the ring gear on the starter was still engaged with the flex plate. I got a screw driver and pushed it to disengage it and it didn't snap back. I had to push it all the way back. I pulled the plugs to put the engine back at TDC and it turned smoothly without grinding. It looks like the gear matched up fine when I pushed it back. Should have replaced the starter! Trying to save a buck. It is the only piece except for the coil which is not new. Guess what other piece I am going to buy with the starter. Well, I'm headed to church to pray that is all it is. Thanks again.
