Vent problems

I have an 86 6.9 and I was wondering if anyone could help me with either a link to another forum or the answer. Either way I would appreciate it.

My problem is that no matter what I do I only get air to blow through the vents. Both hot and cold depending on the temp switch, but its getting close to winter and I know I am going to need my defroster. Any ideas on what is broken?

Please help! Thanks

I currently have the same problem, mine is stuck on defrost though. It is a vacuum problem. Mine is missing a line for whatever reason, I haven't got around to fixing it yet.

I think in 86, trucks with ac were vacuum controlled, non ac has cables.

I checked the lines, the ones coming from under the hood into the 3 prong interchange behind the glove box look iffy. They seem to be holding but the look like they are cracking. Does anybody know what size hose they are? I don't want to take them off in case the fall apart on me. Also where would I get vacuum lines like that?

Thanks for all your help guys!

Could be a weak vacuum pump, but you would also have problems with your brake power assist.

Your vacuum pump must pull at least 20in in vaccum to operate all vacuum related controls...

Nope! Brand new vac pump. Pulls real good not sure what the number is for sure though. Made my tranny shift better and finally fixed the problems with my brakes. Didn't realize it was bad until the booster went out on me on a road trip to visit grand parents. Gpa found it for me, he's got all the testers and tools.

OK so in the last few months I have done some searching and today I did some exploratory surgery and ran a couple tests. My vacuum is in the required range and the vacuum regulator works. When it is on floor, vent, or A/C it is pulled all the way in and on defrost its all the way out and floor it is in the middle. As far as I can tell my vents should be switching to defrost and floor. Still have no idea why. Any help would be appreciated.

Could be something stuck in the vent system preventing the doors from opening or closing. I'm not sure if its quite the same on an 86, but on mine (88), if you remove the glove box, the heater box is right there and quite easy to screw around with. At that point you could play around with the controls and see what moves and doesn't move and hopefully find and fix the problem.

Ok so i found out it was the door flap near the heater core. For some reason I can get it to work sometimes and not others. When it doesn't work it tends to pivot up instead of swinging to block off the vents. Has anyone ran into this before? What can I do to fix it?

Thanks

i have some what of the same issue, haven't checked the vacuum lines and i know the actual hoses that run to the up top vents not necessarily the defroster i haven't checked but the face vent hoses aren't fully seated so they don't blow fully towards me, but i can't get my switch for AC Heat or Defrost to move it's full range, there's a ton of resistance like it's the cable style and something is disconnected or missing. tried to take the center control cover off and take out the ac heat control panel off but it doesn't come out because obviously it's all hooked up back there and there seems not to be a very good way to get back there and look at everything, anyone had the problem of not being able to move your switches?
