ive been searching the net for a fix but thought i post here since you diesel guys might know. im helping a buddy with his topkick cat 3116 cold start i dont see glow plugs but i think i see some sort of air heater at the intake right before the air goes into the motor. it has a small relay on top of the valve cover . any of you guys work on these before??
Yes I own 10 of them. and they all have had cold start issuses. I Also have C7's and 3126 B Cats. The 3116 is a mechanical engine. So dont touch the govenor or injectors. It takes special tools and training to adjust the gov and injectors.
The small relay like a starter relay on older fords is for the grid heater. Is that old enough to have a cable to turn the fuel off or does it have an electric fuel shutoff on the pump?

yea thanks poolguy i saw many threads and procedures for that but i could not find any thing on glow plugs or a intake air heater. he is just having a long cold start once warmed up it runs good. i thought it would be fairly easy to change the gp's but now i think they dont have them.

What kind of issue is it having??
truck is not here now for me to look at the fuel shut off. the relay was much smaller than a typical starter relay . it was round about 2in's in diamater and 2 in's high . is the grid heater to heat intake air in cold conditions . thats what i was thinking the relay is probibbly the culpret since i could not find any gp's . thanks carlton wes
after looking at a standard relay i have here i guess it is similar in size just looks smaller with no bracket attached.

Pull the rubber cover back on the solinoid wires. It has 2 self locking nuts with nylon. they get loose and get hot and burn out the solinoid. .
Just so you know. there are 2 sensors, water temp and oil pressure. there is a timer module on the driver side that controls the on-off times. I have never seen a grid go bad but I stock 5 solinoids because even if they go bad the wait to start light still comes on the same amount of time and the drivers just crank the starters untill they start.

Same as our trucks....Might be a good candidate for Grid heater led mod.
