So when I converted my truck to 4x4, I had to swap out the selector shaft in the donor truck's 4x4 trans with a different one and since that requires dropping the pan, I figured I would just change the fluid and filter while at it.
So when I put it back together I used the black pan gasket that came with the new trans filter, along with some RTV to keep the gasket in place on the pan. So when I filled it up, it leaked.
Didn't leak too bad so I put it off for a little while and dropped and re-sealed the pan with some "Permatex - The Right Stuff", well after doing that, it STILL leaked. So yet again I dropped the pan to re-do it.
This time I opted for a new transmission pan, it's a deep one, 3 quarts extra capacity. I also bought a Moroso re-usable transmission pan gasket. It's rubber coated steel, and it's pretty hefty. Cleaned the mating surface on the transmission, and used NO Rtv, or sealant or anything. Just dry on dry.
Torqued pan bolts down to 10 ft. lbs., no leaks the first day. Next day I noticed a couple drops under the truck. Went and looked and sure enough it's trans fluid. The leak is very slow, but it is still annoying.
I'm going to get a B&M ratcheting floor shifter, and that comes with a new selector shaft for it's own linkage setup, so I'll have to drop the pan again, thankfully I now have a drain plug on the pan
But I am thinking I am just going to drop it off at the shop and let them deal with it... Any ideas?
Is the problem that I'm not using a cork gasket, like the factory used on these trucks new?
Yes, it's leaking from one side of the transmission gasket. As I said, it is a VERY slow leak. We're talking a few drops a day here, lol. But still, it's leaking.
Took me 8 full weekends to do it, due to my college internship in the summer, I only got time to do it on weekends at my stepdad's house which is 2 hours away from where I live. In that time we removed everything needed from the donor truck, rebuilt the entire front end, and removed everything from my truck and swapped the 4x4 stuff in.

Otherwise feel free to PM me and I'd be glad to answer any questions you have.
Never, ever use silicone on transmission pan gasket. That is a no-no. If anything comes loose on the inside it could give you problems. Not good.
Clean and dry is the only way to put it on. Most of the late model pans have eyelets to keep from overtorquing them. I did my 4rw and AOD without any hassle or leaks.
I wouldn't use that rubber covered reuseable POS either. Just a plain cork gasket, dry and snug.
Did you use anything like Loctite PST on the bolt threads?
You don't mention what tranny it is, but there is a possibility that's where it's coming from.
When I had my tranny issues pulling the pan a few times I useda few dabs Of vaseline (petroleum jelly) tojold the gasket.
The Instructions for the shift kit said to use 100%petroleum jelly (original Vaseline) to hold the check ***** in place as it dissolves in the tranny fluid quickly and won't cause any issues. I have dropped pan 3 times using the rubber gasket and no leaks.

Hmm ok, thanks for the advice. I thought the reuseable would be a better route to go, but I guess not. I will probably go with a Cork gasket the next time around.

Sorry, it's an AOD. I did not use anything on the bolt threads. Bolts went in dry.

That is part of the leakage, lol. When I swapped out the selector shaft I also did replace that seal. Must have dinged the new one up a little putting it in or something, I don't know.
Went under the truck with it parked, and dried off the tiny amount of fluid around the selector shaft side of the pan and saw very slow seepage coming from the pan gasket. Also a little from the selector shaft.
is it coming from the same place on the pan every time ? mayby a bad spot in the case casting? and silicone is fine on a trans pan as long as u dont use way too much . alot of factory trans only use silicone for a pan gasket
No it's not. Got this new aftermarket pan since the original had bent edges on it anyways, so that was probably the main cause of the leak. I think when I get my ratcheting floor shifter and new selector shaft I'll just use a cork gasket. But I do also have a rubber Fel-Pro that I never used. So not sure what to go with.
