i have an 06 powerstroke. i bought it and it had the banks monster exhaust on it with dual tips out back. i want to keep the tailpipe setup but i want to ditch the cat first then maybe muffler. the banks system is very quiet and seems restrictive.my question is can i just buy the right size piping and unbolt cat then put right size piping and bolt it back?? i think the cat pipe i measured was 3.5 inlet 3.5 outlet so does that mean i would buy 3.5 piece of pipe??
The Banks folks are very responsive - call them and ask what benefit there might be to removing the converter, etc. You may find little or no gain and a lot of work. They may also sell the pipe you're looking for or have some other ideas. I suspect they won't advocate removing the cat, however.
Is you Banks kit the twin tip cat back? Or did it come with a replacement downpipe?
There's a flange between the stock downpipe and cat that comes out with the cat. So unless you cut the flange off the downpipe you can't just fit in a replacement pipe. MBRB makes a "test pipe" that bolts the the flange, but IIRC is only works on their replacement 4" downpipe.
So you could buy an MBRB downpipe and test pipe, then keep your cat back Banks. If you have a Banks downpipe replacement, I can't help you because I don't know how it mounts to the stock cat, but I'd assume it's a similar flange.
