What Engine To Build...

Well like the title says what should I build? At my school we are required to do a senior project. I decided to build a motor, I would like to either build something with the big block bell housing or FE. What I'm looking for is a motor that will push 450TQ. What all should I do to this engine to make it push that much torque and what do you think the total cost would cost? I would like to have this done and in my truck by February? Is this possible for people with "some" experience?

If you are wanting those kind of numbers, you will need a 460. These numbers aren't very logical for something to do for a senior project. You will need a lot of machine work done by a professional. It will definitely be the most expensive senior project haha Look at a couple thousand at the machine shop, a couple thousand in parts.

550tq is a ton of power and WILL require machine work, big carb, new intake, block bored, big cam, etc.

How much time and money would it cost to build one that pushed 450tq?

Check this link out. 460 Horsepower Chart (revised 1/24/09) - 460 Ford Forum

I've got a 300 sitting in the shed that I'm going to turbocharge in my next project. According to the numbers I've run, it should do 450-475 ft. lb. at less than 10 lb. of boost. That would be doable in a highschool shop class.

From the research I've done so far, the stock 300 parts are good up to 12-15 lbs. Some head porting would probably help the engine breath as the stock 300 head is pretty restrictive.

This engine doesn't fit your requirement for bellhousing, however.

Actually I have a 300 that I just pulled to replace with a 400. I just wanted something a little bigger.

What kind of hp and tq would a 351M push if I put on a:

Edelbrock Intake
Holley 650cfm Carburetor
Bore it .30 over
Cam with a .524/.524 lift and a 272/272 duration
Headers with true duals

I am not positive, but maybe 300 max. These 351m are boats. You could turn it into a 400 fairly cheap with a TMeyer kit and have your 300hp.

If you are planning on doing anything with the 400 then you need to head over to tim meyers website:TMeyer, Inc. Precision Automotive Machining and head over to the forum all about the 5.8/6.6L engines. People on this forum have done some pretty impressive stuff with them and tim would be able to help you in that department tremendously. Make sure you do your own research first but the 400 could be a good starting block.

What all would need to be done to a 390 to get those numbers?
