engine building question

hey guys been trying to do some research on how to build my own 351w motor and i just don't know where to start. i know i have a idea of 500-600hp i want to make but not for sure how to get there. either a natural or boosted motor and do i need to bore it or stroke it and the important one what kind of head to run on the motor. any advice would help either by posting it or maybe there is a good book i can pick up and do some reading.

many right ups.. in car magazines... with part numbers and dyno runs..

since the 1970's.. and still going on....

and your hp numbers ... are for a pro shop to build. my opinion...
over 500 hp.... is custom head work. and a really strong bottom end.

yea magazines just give u bits and pieces of information not the whole pictures on how everything works together. and yea a machine shop would have to do all the work on the block and heads but im talking about getting all the parts send them to a machine shop they send it back to me and i put most of it together myself. but for me to get everything together i need information on how everything works so i can get the right parts.

Google "how to build a small block Ford" and find a bunch of how-to books.

The magazine articles do provide a laundry list of parts and suppliers. Sometimes they go into the particulars of machine work and assembly tips.

IMO the SBF is one of the easiest motors to work on. It's a known, proven item with tons of aftermarket choices.

I would go with a solid later model roller block, research aftermarket heads, and a 393 or 408 stroker. Good rods, forged pistons.

Check the newish aftermarket EFI setups.

Spend more than you want to on headers.

The cam choice and compression ratio are decisions you have to make. How easy or hard to live with do you want the motor to be?

It's easy.

When you say "how everything works", are you talking about component compatibility? The stroker people know their requirements, and the cam maker knows what CR works best with their cams for example.
