i have a 79 f350 4wd with the borg warner t19 4 spd. it pops out of 1st 2nd and 3rd on decel and out of 4th when i hammer down. i had it out and apart and replaced the syncros (the detents had some wear) but it didnt help. i ran it for a while since i only use it on my family farm, but the other day i was hauling a wagon load of cord and lost 4th completely it poped out as soon as i put it in gear. took the top of nad the 3-4 ford had bad wear in the groove where the finger of the shifter moves the fork. replaced that to no prevail. just wondering if anyone has any ideas what could be causing my stress
i just replaced the 3-4 fork this afternoon but it still has the same problem it will hold in 4th if i dont go over half throttle can pooch it up to 60 and cruise but i gotta be real easy on the throttle
According to the 1979 Light Truck Shop Manual this can be caused by one of the following: Stiff shift boot, loose transmission to engine mounting bolts or loose levers, flywheel housing to engine crankshaft out of line, Crankshaft pilot bushing or bearing worn, or interior components damaged.
thanks everyone for your input, i checked all the bolts and they were good. also i put a new shifter in when i had it out and rebuilt the syncros because the factory one was worn pretty bad. i also machined a new pin that holds the shifter square with the forks as it was also sloppy. as far as the detents in the cover, they have pretty good resistance to them i have to wap them with my palm to get them to move not sure how hard their supposed to move but they dont slide back and forth easily. im starting to suspect the pilot bearing since it has issues in all the gears, not just in two that share a fork and syncro ring
