i order a horn off ebay. well this horn has 2 wires. red & black one on my truck only has one wire yellow. how do you hook the new horn up ? they look like air horn. but use no air. 12 volt only. thanks
Your existing horn grounds through its mounting bolts, so it only has one wire, for power. If this new horn is a 12-volt horn, then the ground needs to tie to sheetmetal through a ring terminal. The power would then go to the existing horn power (which comes from the horn relay or directly through the horn switch depending on year).
got it.. thank you both.. the only other thing on my horn. must be a short. did it with old horn. sometimes it work other times it won't. on steering wheel it has round cap. under cap has a spring. a board. 1 wire plugs into... i went to napa. bought a button horn go around steering column. he said to ground 1 end of wire, and the other end to the horn. now the 1 to horn. should it be to red or black wire to horn ?
'74's use a horn relay so that switch works as a ground circuit. It doesn't really matter which is which but, just to keep things the same, ground the black and red goes to the wire that goes to the horn relay (should be light blue w/ yellow trace)
On steering wheel it has round cap under cap has a spring.
Your truck has the wrong steering wheel, or it's an aftermarket replacement.
1961/66 F100/250 2WD's, 1967/70 F100/350's have a three spoke steering wheel, with either a horn ring (Custom Cabs) or a horn button (Standard Cabs).
3 spoke steering wheel uses a horn brush and insulator, fits into a hole on the outside of the steering wheel.
1971/79 F100/350's have a two spoke steering wheel and a vinyl horn pad/switch.
The high and low horns are the same: 1958/82 all FoMoCo vehicles except 1972/76 Lincoln/Continental Mark/Thunderbird that have triple horns.
Ford changed the horn design in 1983, looks different than previous horns, the bracket is slightly different, but these horns will work as FoMoCo replaced the 1958/82 horns with these.
All F100/350's have a horn relay thru 1977. 1978/79 F100/350's with factory installed Speed Control also have a horn relay. Plugs into the Speed Control amplifier located adjacent to the fuse box.
1978/79 F100/350's without factory installed Speed Control do not have a horn relay.
getting nothen out of new horn button. i had to add 2 wires to push button i just got. it all ready. nothen happen. 2 horns. both hooked up. black wire from horn to horn. then grounded. wire from relay to old horn red wires 2 both horns and tied into old yellow wire from relay. i tied into the wires from horn to horn. same color wires. red and black.

Wrong steering wheel for any 1971/79 F100/350, see post 7.
With a horn button, the 3 spoke steering wheel uses a horn brush and insulator (C2OZ-13A821-A). Fits into a hole on the outside of the steering wheel, visable when the horn button is removed.
Horn operates thru turn signal switch. 1973/77's use different turn signal switches, so horn brush/insulator will not work.
The horn circuit is really pretty simple. There is a relay mounted on the passenger side splash pan, near the starter solenoid. It will have three wires going to it. They yellow/black trace wire is battery voltage, hot at all times, the yellow/green trace will go to the horn(s) and the light blue/yellow trace will go to the horn switch.
When you press the horn switch, you're grounding a circuit that will cycle the relay. When the relay closes, the horn will blow.
First, check that you have 12V at the relay. Next, with a multi-meter, check for continuity in the lt blue/yellow trace wire. If that checks good, the check continuity in the yellow/green trace wire that goes to the horn. If that checks okay, replace the horn relay.
Bill, from his description in post #4, it "sounds" like the OP has an aftermarket steering wheel.
got it done. i may have found the short the wire yellow plug into old horn. wire was bad
i had cut it back more. so horn for now working like it should. i add utube video as soon as its done, thanks.
also i forgot to add before sometimes horn get stuck i have pop cap off unplug wire while i was driving. and if my arm was touching the door if i push horn i get shocked. hope now that the end of it.
