Dana 44 axle question

Dana 44 axle question
Hey guys, just trying to wrap my head around a problem,
78 f100 Australian 4x4 same as your 250 I'm led to believe.
Can I run my Dana 44 without axles? I have not pulled one apart before and got very little info out of my ford workshop manual.
It's never going off road again, have other toys for that and I'd like to remove the locking hub completely and basically run 4x2 hubs, I just don know how to do it...
Sorry if this is a stupid question but I've been searching for hours with no luck, this is mainly regarding wheel fitment with an enclosed centre on the rim where the locking hub would normally protrude.
I was thinking about cutting the locking hub assembly off flush with the brake I just can't figure out how the brake to spindle attaches, I should just go and pull the thing to bits but thought I'd ask first
