Well in a 1970 F100 anyway! I got in a pinch and had to sell this truck a few years back. Now, the guy who bought it from me was in a pinch of his own and I got it back!
Getting it road ready this week. One question...what is this switch hanging from under the dash? Looks like it goes on the column but I can't tell what/where.
Hanging under dash, which side? To the right (passenger) side of the steering column, or to the left (drivers) side of the steering column? M/T or A/T?
Ok, I'm trying to refrain from fighting sarcasm with smart assm. But, you do you see the pic of the truck right? And the pic of the gizmo right underneath that? And the brake pedal there in, indicating driver's side under column right?
Sorry bub, no picture of a truck in this post except Bill's.
Your question "One question...what is this switch hanging from under the dash?" my response how the hello would we know. It could be any number of things that someone may have added.
I did go back & click quote on your thread and see that there is a non working reference, maybe because one has to be logged in to see.
I tried to duplicate but could not.
Bring the image up, right click then click copy image url, come back click the yellow post card looking thingie above when posting paste in there & it should work.
NSS located on steering column. Its NSS selector lever attaches to the shift tube thru a hole in the mast jacket (steering column outer shroud).
The lever is spring steel, has a knife blade end that fits into the NSS. The little charmer either loses tensile strength and falls off the shift tube, or its knife blade end snaps off.
When the knife blade end snaps off (it's notorious for doing this), the truck can be started in any gear. Not pleasant!

Alright, if you'll go back to my first post you should see the pics. The guy I bought it from did not know either. But I've figured out now that it is the NSS. It is currently jury rigged(spring held compressed) and hanging loose. It starts in all gears. Now that I know what it is I can fix. Thanks fer yer help
Yup NSS. FYI: Mine (swapped in) is attached but like yours doesn't work. It doesn't bother me that my truck starts with the selector anywhere. It has been a good thing once or twice when the truck became uncranked and I had to restart it while moving.
I believe it is a single screw that holds it to the column.

This diagram is from the 1964/72 Ford Truck Parts Catalog / Illustration Section A72, Page 5.
Fordification has their name on every page in this catalog, some people assume it's theirs exclusively. It ain't.
This same catalog can be bought by anyone, since it's the CD version sold by hipoparts.com
Hey, I wanna give a big THANKS to NumberDummy! I broke the horn ring retainer trying to get to the turn signal switch to repair it. When I Googled up the P/N I found this thread in which he yielded the number to Parts International not 15 miles from my house.
Now, how do I put it back on without breaking it? LOL, Looks like insert and turn clockwise to lock. Is that correct?
Thanks! I got 'er all put back together...gently. Could only find the turn signal repair kit. Had a little trouble since the cam was originally held by a rivet. Drilled and tapped it and it works like a charm now. Going to make it legal tomorrow and get it back on the road!
