Hello everyone,
I recently purchased an F-150 and had to swap out a bad motor. Both head gaskets were blown and 2 pistons had a small chunk missing. Due to needing the vehicle for the upcoming winter, I just swapped in a junkyard motor. I got lucky that they did not request a core so I find myself with a spare 302 block, plenty of time to work on it, and a little money... not enough to make it a toy, just looking for a little better than stock. This will be going into a 4x4 and primary purpose is highway driving but would like to have some fun when the opportunity presents itself. Gas mileage is not a concern as I have my car for that. As this truck still has the stock computer I don't know what I can get away with. Any suggestions?

You can't get too carried away but you can certainly do a lot better than stock. That should be a roller motor and the stock cam is tiny so I'd suggest the comp 35-512-8 if the truck has tall gearing(3.08) but if 4.10s were in the budget then the Comp 35-349-8 will make more peak HP. If you can find a set of GT40 cylinder head that will also help but porting the stocks will bring gains as well. No other changes are really necessary to get close to 300hp from this thing(assuming a full exhaust system), the stock truck intake is massive and the stock injectors will support this power level as long as you don't spend all your time at 6000rpm. If you rebuild the bottom end just bring it to stock spec with maybe hypereutectic pistons with valve eyebrows, high volume oil pumps just rob power and the stock truck rods are also pretty stout.
That sounds great. I'll look into those cams. Not sure what gearing it has as I have not looked that deep into it yet. More focused on getting it running first lol But I have noticed that someone put some wrench time into it. The Exhaust that is going on it is: Got a pair of motorcraft shorty headers to home made true duals into purple horny glasspacks and exit thru dual 3 inch stacks with rain caps. I know, I know... stacks on a gas engine isn't as popular as it used to be but I live in the sticks lol. Its a step-side so the stacks are run right thru the front steps on the box.
