rear disc brakes on a dana 60 ford parts.

well guys come up with a plan to install rear disc brakes on my dana 60 or 70. using ford parts not chevy. kinda turns my stomache a little mixing with the other brand. chevy's OK but don't mix it up, just not right. anyways me and jason have figured out how to build a bracket to adapt a 1995 front disc brake on a dana 60. similar to the chevy style upgrade except its ford parts. was looking at a dana 80 rear with the newer lug nut pattern and it can be done also. the 95/96 fords have the old style bolt pattern, not sure on the split of years when ford went to new bolt pattern but believe it was 2000? need some more input on this for correct information. will have some photos soon but just got mocked up using a card board template and about a 1/4" off set from back of flange on a dana 60. My truck is a 1970 ford crewcab 4wd. it will stop on a dime especially under load with this upgrade!! my truck has hydroboost brakes on it now instead of factory manual brakes. catch you later. the rotor is 13" diameter just from mocking up you have to use a 16" rim to clear everything inside the rim. once completed will have some photos. keepin old iron alive one ford at a time. this setup is better than the standard chevy caliper setup single piston. factory ford with dual piston setup. just purchased a new rotor and caliper and was around $150.00 new at o'reilly auto parts. adios amigos and will update in about a week on brakes. work is killin my toy time.

forgot to mention you need to find a bracket off a used 3/4 ton to 1 ton setup with the 2 big bolts for this upgrade. just happen to have these parts laying around in stash and the lightbulb came on and now its time to upgrade with ford parts.

no emergency brake!

with this upgrade you have no emergency brake. gonna need a driveline brake to hold in place unless your running a automatic. manual leave in gear or build something for driveline brake. i have something in mind but built yet, stuff in my head just need to get it on the ground to truck.

This is 100% Ford parts. I wrote this to start a new post but it fits perfect here.

I just finished switching my rear Dana 60 to disc brakes on my 72 Highboy, I found a fairly simple way to do it with instructions and pictures from;

NORTH COUNTRY SPECIALTIES ®

The only problem I had was they have the wrong NAPA part number for the brake pads listed, should be, TS TS7054M

I have already switched the front axle to a 1976 F-250 Dana 44 with disc brakes and open knuckle's. the rear brakes are exactly the same as the front, mounting bracket, calipers and pads. In both axle's I replaced every removable part, only the housing were used on both. I have only driven it around the shop yard for now, The truck is still in restoration and about a mouth from being finished. I have already put the 76 Highboy fully integrated Power Steering on the truck and have switched it to a C-6 from the NP-435 and had both axle' switched to 3.54 gears, switching tires from 9.50 X 16 to 295-75-16, which will bring the gearing down even more. The only down side to all this work is that it was right at $3,000 dollars for getting all this axle work done.

For those who wonder about parking brake, yes it's gone, I removed everything from inside the cab and all the cables. I will be installing a Park-Lok Hydraulic Brake on the rear for the very few times I need it.

Just FYI, 2000's Ford vans (E250/E350) have rear disc brakes on a Dana 60 rear. They are the same 8-6.5 bolt pattern also. The axle itself may be too wide but bot sure if any of the parts would retrofit to an earlier axle.

1999 thru today E250/350's have rear disc brakes. E250's have Dana 60's, and while some E350's have Dana 60's, some have Dana 70's.

F250/350's went to metric wheels in 1999, but no Econoline (including E150's) has metric wheels.

thanks guys for input.

more than one way to skin a cat. upgrading these old fords is kinda tricky and more input the better. just wanting ford parts on my ford. will have a plate built hopefully next weekend and mounted. work is killin my truck time. thanks for help on yrs of vehicles and cool photos on rear brakes. we actually looked at that setup but didn't want to rob off this paticular axle for spare. keepin old iron alive one ford at a time!
