Quick Question --- Voltages

At what voltage should I be reading on the starter for it to function? In trying to fix my ongoing no start problem, I checked the voltage at the starter and it was about 200 volts. Is that enough juice for it to start the engine?

Starter voltage is the same as the battery. There will be a drop in voltage because the starter draws a lot of current but should be close, probably 11 volts or so. How did you measure? Were you on the correct scale .. DC, AC or what?

I must have been on the wrong setting than. If it is key on, it should be reading 12 volts?

Key on or key off the big wire is always 12 volts as it comes directly from the battery. The smaller big wire is 12 volts only when cranking, otherwise nothing.

Ford Truck Enthusiasts Forums - View Single Post - 1996 F-250 7.3L Issues with the Starter

In that post, I posted my voltages in several conditions while I had my starter incorrectly hooked up.

Edit: Here is a link to the entire thread. Basically, what happened is the voltage drop when the key is turned to "run" is the glow plugs putting a load on the batteries, and the second voltage drop is when the starter was revving without hitting the flexplate. I would expect the electrical draw to be more when it actually engages the flexplate. You can read that entire thread if you want to, but it's kind of embarrassing to me, since the whole issue was caused by me incorrectly hooking up electricity to the starter.

Edit2: I don't really have any amperage information.
