What trans do you have?Dipstick usually is press in(there's an o-ring near the base of the tube) and the only bolt is up near the bellhousing to engine area to kee the tube from flopping around. What's a topographic tranny? If you mean belhosing bolts, there should be six bolts holding the trans to the engine.Did you unbolt the torque converter from the flexplate?Did you drain the converter?Starter needs to come out as well as speedo cable/wire.I assume you have a two wheel drive trans.Once everything is unbolted, pull the trans back(with it supported on your trans jack) and lower it.What year truck?

Meant to say on top of tranny,I'm on phone doing this.on dip stick there is a piece of metal(welded?)to it.it then is bolted to back of block as far as I can tell.I have the 5.8 liter and I think the eo4d.talking to a couple auto recycle yards there are 2 trannys forthis truck.oh its a 95.was also told that 95 is only one that will work because of the solienoids in the transmission to computer relationship? ?

Removal is straight forward.Unbolt the six bolts from bellhousing to engine.Remove the starter. The dipstick will be on one of those 6.Make sure you drain the trans fluid first. If you can't drain the converter, put a drain pan under it.Pull the driveshaft and all the aforementionned accessories(see previous post). With the trans supported on a trans jack pull back till the bellhousing clears the engine/flexplate/converter.You may have to pry between the bellhousing/engine to separate the two.Just be careful as the trans is heavy and if it's not balanced right it'll tip and fall.Make certain that EVERYTHING is disconnected from the trans before you try to remove it.Not sure on what years are interchangeable.I'm not familiar with the computer controlled trans.Maybe someone who knows these OD trans will chime in.Try a search to see what years are compatible.
