I'm going to install pacesetter long tubes #70-2223's on my basically stock 5.8 in my 90 F250 going over to the right side in 2 1/2 coming together in 3" thru the converter (hi-flow) out to a 3" short Magna-flo 2 chamber muffler then exit behind the right rear tire with 3" (whew) !!!
Gonna get a new Y-pipe in 2 1/2" ... do I really need to do the "Y" in mandrel bends or just go with what the shop does??? (lots cheaper)
Future mods are a Crane 444232 cam, new lifters and 1.7 rockers and a rebuild... not building for speed just towing, torque, and MPG (and some nice noise) ... Thank you, Dave
To be honest I would get the Y pipe done in mandrel bends. Yes it will be more expensive, but you want the exhaust to flow well and making the Y pipe restrictive while everything else has good flow is just dumb in my opinion. Don't want to sound rude at all, just my $0.02

My other option is to go to 2 3/4 "Y" pipe material .... being retired doesn't leave me a big budget to spend on my truck and I must travel 60+ mi. to the only shop that works with mandrel bends !!!
2.5" pipe bent in the muffler shop hydraulic bender produces a pipe with an effective cross section of less than 2" for a 90deg bend, so regardless what you put behind it your motor is breathing through something like 1.85" head tubes. I had a muffler shop Y-pipe on my 5.8 before I hand built a mendrel version and the difference between the two was night and day.
My 460 has 2 1/2" head pipes.
I don't think your 351 is going to need more CFM.
DO go with the mandrel bends if you can afford it.
Lots less restriction and turbulence.
Up here in the salt belt crinkle pipes will eat themselves alive in just a couple of winters.
I agree on the salt belt thing but that isn't an issue here in the desert southwest ... when there is blowing sand on the road it's like they get a free sandblasting job !!! The left side should only have 2 major bends to mate up with the right side !!! And from the merge to the cat it will almost be a straight shot in 3" pipe then thru the "HY-FLO" CAT with 3" in & out it's almost straight again thru the 2 chamber muffler ... if I put it back on ???
For the "Y" and the CAT I was quoted $400.00 for the job !!! How is that ??? Dave

Thanks Conanski, I kinda thought there would be some differance, bit I didn't think it would be that much. I wish some one would make a pre-made "Y" for my truck & motor ... that is one that Pasesetter doesn't offer even in "off road". Since I'm going to use their long tubes it would be perfect ...OH WELL .... Thanks Dave

Evan, Thanks for your input and don't worry about the "dumb" or "rude" stuff ... some times this gray hair turns blonde and I do dumb real well !!!
I suppose I get some E-mail about that "blonde" crack... OH WELL ... Dave
Sounds like you're in the same situation as me, no budget and no shops in my area. I have flex on temporarily, and am definitely going to have a mandrel bent pipe made up as soon as possible; for the reasons Conanski has already mentioned.

Don't know.
My truck is "NON-CATALYST" on the emissions sticker.
I put my exhaust together for under $200, but I have a MIG, and I like to use it!
Dual 2 1/2" in, 3" out all welded Walker brand school bus muffler and a 3" stainless Magnaflow universal tailpipe.
It sounds like a bus.. or a dump truck.
"Throaty", but it won't rot and flows plenty for my application.
