So I was in the process of replacing my brake cables because the one snapped. I pulled off the right drum and the inside is totally covered in wonderful slurry of brake fluid, brake dust, and dirt. Whats my easiest, fastest, cheapest option here; rebuild the piston, buy new one, etc? Thanks in advance.
Also, what the heck are the back pistons called? I can find them anywhere on advance auto website or Rock auto.
So just replace as apposed to rebuild? I found the kit at advance auto; about half of what the cylinder cost. Is is worth it just to get the whole cylinder then? Also, should I replace both sides while I'm at it or just do the one for now? This cheap 700$ dollar truck is getting expensive lol.
Replace all the hardware and probably the linings as well since they are probably contaminated. Replace the wheel cylinders and all the springs as well. Get a couple of cans of brake cleaner and get it really nice in there and you'll have an easier time putting it all back together. Oh and yes do both sides.
Always ... you replace one you replace both ... don't matter if it's shocks, brakes, stabilizer links, lower/ upper ball joint... whatever, ones gone, the next is yet to go. I was haulin a 29 ft. 5th wheel and had a brake line blow just in front of a line of traffic at a red light. I managed to stop ok after some trailor brake management and cooling my wife down. I got home safe and replaced the intire system before I would allow my son to take her out this year.
