wheels

Could you guys explain to me the steel wheel size thing. Such as, my truck has 15" wheels. I popped off one of the baby moons and it says 10-1/8" baby moon. A 49 should have had 16s right? I'm fine with the ones on there but all these various catalogs say 8" and 9". Someone educate me here please. Thanks!
BTW, wheels have the four bumps on that flange.

Stock/original wheels, whether 15" or 16", had the "innie" bumps, meaning bumps on the inside of the hub mounting area lip. Newer wheels have them on the outside of that lip. Judging by the current size of your hubcap, you likely have the newer wheels with the outie bumps.

EDIT: Just looked at your truck pictures. Your hubcaps do not appear to be stock. They're smooth. They should have FORD stamped into them. You'll need to find a set of original/stock 15" or 16" wheels with the innie bumps. I have a set of five 15" wheels with the innie bumps that have nearly new Bridgestone thin white wall radials installed (seen in your previous WWW tire post).

Wayne,
to answer your questions in order; 1) the 10 1/8 baby moon is the size of the "Baby Moon" hub cap, they make internal and external caps depending on the wheel (the definition of wheel is the metal piece the tire mounts to) 2) I don't know for sure as I don't own one but would guess that it came with 16" wheels 3) the 8" and 9" is referring to Ford differentials, which are only two of the many brands and sizes available.

Hope this helps a little.

Someone please delete this whole thread. Definition of a wheel, huh? Never mentioned rear ends either . Maybe read the text before you post crap like that. If you will look in a parts book you will see baby moon caps in various sizes.. ....as I clearly stated. Some are in the 8" range, some 9" range. WHEEL COVERS.

Best not to stamp your feet and insist that you were clear.

As I read your post, you were asking about wheel sizes while interjecting information on baby moons - which have their own sizing scheme, as you correctly (but some what confusingly) indicated.

Listen to Panelman, the 49 F1s came with either 15 or 16 inch wheels.

This forum is helpful - you'll occasionally get some responses that are not spot on - no different from face to face conversation. Sometimes we just need to filter without judging.

Whatever. ....just reread it. I INTERJECTED the baby moon question because that's exactly what tipped me off that the wheels I have do not accommodated the hub caps I see listed for "original style" wheels. That is exactly why I described the flange with 4 bumps (outies ). I just wanted clarification on the difference in my wheels and the wheels that use the hub caps with a flange diameter of 8-1/8", 9", etc. Having built many rear ends from bare housings to race ready with moser 31 spline axles, rebuilt center sections, etc. I hardly need the definition of a wheel....since 1997 I have gladly contributed how to articles, videos and anything else I could do for members of several forums and would enjoy doing the same here.

I agree that there are times when responses don't fit but how condescending does one have to be (definition of a wheel) to go too far.

Maybe this isn't the place for me. We will see. Like I said above, this whole thing can be deleted and we can start over. I do not enjoy this type of crap.

Jeez! Got attitude? I'm sure Dave was trying to be helpful and just mis-read your post. I sure with all that experience on rear end building and such that you would never do anything as silly as mis-read a post.

Besides, being such an expert on all things rear end I'm surprised you didn't already know the difference in 8", 9", and 10" inch hubcaps...

Perhaps you should frequent the HAMB board instead. You may fit in well there.

Sorry Wayne, your original post says nothing about having original wheels, you did not make it clear that you where trying to get different hub caps for your wheels, how am I or anybody else supposed to know exactly what wheel you have to give you direction without either the name of the manufacturer or a picture. There are lots of people out there who don't know the difference between a tire and a wheel.

I am glad you know how to build differentials, so do I, but what does that have to do with hub caps which seems to be what you asking about with out being clear.

I hope you figured it out.

Truck. ....its all good. Defining wheel just hit me wrong at the time. My life is a major struggle this last year but that's no excuse for blowing a fuse. I should have just let it roll.. .my apologies.
