I am curious on what the masses are getting for mileage when towing yer 5er or whatever.
We drove from OR to upper MI, around 2.2K mi and are now heading back. Have a 8X16 enclosed trailer with motorcycle and trike (home made toyhauler*. Back out motorcycles, blow up mattress and crash for the night.)
Anyway, I ve been noticing around 13.5 to 14 mpg on the flatter interstates @ 65 mph. Less going thru mountains, like heading to Bend,OR from the west side of the hills. Was down to almost 10 during that stretch.
No trouble whatsoever..other than having to add a bit of antifreeze. I am impressed with the ease of towing this truck delivers.
Now if those damn fuel prices would drop about a buck or two a gallon..
*side note to anyone considering a enclosed trailer/toy hauler conversion: First thing on list: Insulate the whole thing with 2 inch styrofoam. If you do not, not even the biggest air conditioner in earth will cool the interior off. You will not even be able to touch the ceiling for 2 seconds because of the heat. This lesson was an extremely hard lesson, but one we will remember forever.
2006 F350 DRW CC, 8K+ toyhauler, AZ flats and mountains.
Truck weighs 10K(weighed on a certified scale last month)
Get 8-9mpg towing at 65mph.
No towing, 65mph 15-15.5 mpg
Fuel prices going down, "YEAH RIGHT OK"
Brad, Just took a trip with my #8000 travel trailer and a bunch of stuff in the bed. Vancouver Wa. to Bend. (via Mt. Hood) Then out to Crane Prairie for a couple days of relaxation. Then return trip via Santiam Pass (had to get a Burger at the SnoCap in Sisters) over to Salem, then on Home.
I guess I m in the ballpark, then. I m not towing that heavy of a rig. Not anywhere near a 8K lb 5er. I m guessing around 4K lb. trailer combined with stuff in truck.
I ve talked to a few folks that have towed with gassers with horrid mileage results. In the 5-7 range.
We run down the interstate about 23,400#, truck and 5th wheel combined. It's a 2003 6.0 psd torqshift with 4.10 gears. It'll get 11 mpg (calculated) if the hills aren't too steep. The worst I've seen is in the 9's.
I'm getting mid 9's pulling 9k# fiver. Gotta remember that it is more than just trailer weight, it is frontal area too that affects mileage. Just about everywhere I pull the fiver is in mountains out here in the west.
On a 05 f250 with 38 inch tread i usually am lucky to get 11 to 12 MPG on a lucky day. Towing a +8K trailer I get about 8 to 9. The gas stations smile when they see me." title="Evil Grin" class="inlineimg" border="0">
Going to the eastern sierras from riverside, ca. pulling an 11,000 pound dry, probably 13 to 14 loaded 5th wheel, I average 11.3 going and just over 13 mpg returning. I use cruise control any time possible set at 60 mph.
