I towed 4 atvs on a 17ft open trailer to michigan with 4 of us in the big X. Got 12 mpg hand calculated at 70mph avg. The 5. 4 struggled a few times going uphill and downshifted on its own to maintain 70 which really pissed me off considering I was pulling 4500lbs. Its tuned with a diablo and ypipe mod.
What do you guys get pulling at 70?
Towing depends so much on the driving conditions for me all highway or mixed driving makes a big difference. Weight and drag from the height of the trailer make a big difference.... oh yeah and hills. I tow my 8000# camper on the highway @ 62 on flat ground and get around 12. But take that sukka to the mountains or stop and go OUCH. I also have a 4500# enclosed work trailer I tow with my 6sp. truck like everywhere I go and for the last 10 years average 11.5 mixed driving.
illinois is very flat but the hwy are up and down like a rollercoaster. I have to say that if I would have slowed down my mpg would have gone way up. But I was following someone so that wasn't. A option
That's not so bad for the load you were towing, and the speed. I get 15 mpg towing my 8k tt, 14 mpg in 4 wheel drive towing a 4 place open sled trailer.
when towing a 7500# tt i usally get 8-9mpg on the lie-o-meter. towing in Wisconsin interstates or country roads. the small hills of Kettle Moraine are no problems for the V10 but these hills are not that big. one nice thing of the v10 is when entering the insterstate i get up to posted speed limits in no time. It is fun to watch the faces of people when you pass them at 70mph with a 27ft TT atached to the Excursion. I really like my Ex for towing and long trips.
Our 6.0L gets 10 - 11 mpg while towing our very tall (11.5') and heavy (10,500 lb) travel trailer at a cruise setting of 70 mph. The wing on the roof helps to the tune of 1 mpg.
I average 10 mpg towing my rockcrawler on an open car hauler trailer. V10 2wd with 3.73 gears. It's about 7,000#, crawler and trailer. No real mountains to speak of where I tow, but really hilly. The last trip out I got into some serious headwinds and it dropped to 7.5. Luckily I rode that same head wind, now a tail wind home and it jumped to 12.5 so I averaged out at 10 for the trip.

Unfortunately you averaged 9.375mpg. For example will use a 600 mile round-trip. Trip out 300 miles / 7.5 mpg is 40 gallons. Trip back 300 miles / 12.5 mpg is 24 gallons. Trip average is 600 miles / 64 gallons for a average of 9.375 mpg. I recently discovered this and thought I would share. Still pretty good considering the load and conditions.
Mine ranges from 8-11 towing 10500lbs with the 6.0. I do have a 6" lift and 35's.

12MPG towing with a V8 X seems pretty good to me.
Does your diablo tuner do anything to change your shift points, specifically OD?
