This may not be the ideal place to post this, but nonetheless. I am going to swap out a 5.4 in a buddies early 2000's expedition. The current engine has a rod knock and we will be swapping it out for a junkyard special. I've done older model fords, 60's and 70's engine pulls, however I figure this will be of greater difficulty. What should I/ do I need to look out for? Anybody have any experience or advice with this particular task or others like it? All help much appreciated.
Much easier if you pull the intake, there is not much room under the cowl to work with, plus you risk cracking it. The bonus is getting to the top two transmission bolts. Label all connections, pull the dipstick.
Good news, got the engine swapped already. Stared at the job for about an hour, thinking "what did I get myself into". I pulled the intake before even thinking of trying to squeeze it out with it together, core support was welded on. I ran into the dipsick problem as I was hoisting it out, ran out the engine mount pivitable bolt and separated the mount. Took around 20 hours for in and out, along with swapping over the best parts to the replacement engine, plugs, harness, sensors, ect. All in all not too bad, wasn't hardy any connections, didn't even have to label any of it. Next time I reckon I'll research a job before I quote it. Thanks for the advice.
