I'm considering looking at a 2000 Expedition XLT with the 5.4. engine. Seller listed as a Jaspar replacement engine that has a knock in one of cylinders.. My question is , this type of problem is it repairable or does it need to be replaced ?. This vehicle has the special service pkg and came from a local twp. I understand that the triton eng wasn't one of fords better designs..
Why would you consider a vehicle with a replacement engine that looks like it will need a second replacement? Is it under $2000? Can you do an engine swap yourself? Can you remove the current engine, tear it down and rebuild it yourself?
If you are going to have to pay somebody to do major work, even if you get the truck for free, you will probably come out ahead by finding a good running vehicle.
The 5.4 is an excellent engine, powerful and efficient for its size and power level. I drive one in a work truck that has over 250k miles on it. Some have issues with spark plugs but in general, the 5.4 is a good powerplant.

In response to your comments I said i was only " considering " I never owned a expedition with the triton engine I was only looking for info.
And yes the cost of the vehicle was way under 2,000 ...
He didn't say you did. All he said was that he's never owned one before, which means he doesn't know the ins and outs of the vehicle. At least he's doing the right thing and asking questions beforehand, instead of jumping in with both feet then asking for a bailout.
I am sure you already know this but these engines have a cold start up piston slap. This can be thought of to be a wrist pin or such. My 99 has had this since I bought it and once it runs for a 1/2 a min it goes away. Another thing is it could be a oil filter that needs to be changed. I am sure you know all this but I thought I would throw it in anyway. I have heard of these engines going 400,000 + miles but how many I don't know. Mine still runs great but I only have 83,000 miles on it. Some of the noise makers can be the chain guides the valve adjusters (Lifters but it is over head cam) ect. These things can make some weird noises. If it is cheap enough it can still be worth it.
I agree 100% that the 5.4 can make some strange noises. I have a company truck, '99 F150 5.4 with 255k miles on it. Definately makes some strange noises but over the last 10k I have put on it, I trust it, noises and all. I run it pretty hard, and it keeps on ticking....literally
In response to the original post, aside from the engine issue, I would also be concerned with the vehicle overall. The Special Service Package was a stripped-down package used by police, government, fire/EMS, etc. Depending on how the vehicle was used, there may be other issues aside from the engine. In the line of work I do, I have seen many of these SSV Expeditions come and go. Some are ok, while the majority are in bad shape. Make sure you look over the entire vehicle, because you may be replacing more than just an engine.
Otherwise, I will also mention that the Triton engines are very durable and reliable. We have a 1997 F-250HD at work with 274,000 miles on it. Original engine, trans, drivetrain, etc. It still runs strong.
