I am going to swap out a 5.4 in a buddies early 2000's expedition. The current engine has a rod knock and we will be swapping it out for a junkyard special. I've done older model fords, 60's and 70's engine pulls, however I figure this will be of greater difficulty. What should I/ do I need to look out for? Anybody have any experience or advice with this particular task or others like it? All help much appreciated.
take pictures, LOTS of them...mark and label everything...I know this sounds over the top....but too many times I've seen, someone pick up something and ask "what is this and where does it go?"
Go into a Ford garage and watch how they do it if they'll let you. You'd be surprised at how much they take off to pull an engine. The shop I usually go to pulls the core support along with both front fenders to provide clearance and accessibility when pulling the 4.6/5.4L V-8's from the 1997-2002 F-150/Expedition body style.
Watching the youtube video posted above, you notice that after they got the engine out, they went back and removed the core support to provide more room when putting the new one back in.
Haven't been online lately. Got the engine swapped already( week and a half ago). Stared at the job for about an hour, thinking "what did I get myself into". I pulled the intake before even thinking of trying to squeeze it out with it together, core support was welded on. Took around 20 hours for in and out, along with swapping over the best parts to the replacement engine, plugs, harness, sensors, ect. All in all not too bad, wasn't hardy any connections, didn't even have to label any of it. Next time I reckon I'll research a job before I quote it. Thanks for the help yall.
