I am looking into swaping the e40d to a zf5 in one of my psd, i have a 88 f450 2wd 6.9 with a zf5 for my parts truck and a 97 psd 4x4 crew cab short bed daily driver, want to putt the zf in the 97 and was wondering if anybody can help with some questions that i have.first off i know this swap is possible but do i have the right trans for the job and will the 2wd zf go right in with the t-case on the 4x4?

Welcome to FTE !

You will need a ZF5 from a 7.3 that is a 4x4 trans or one with the parking brake built on the tail housing

The trans has the parking break assembly on the tail end. Is it true that the 2wd trans will work in a 4x4 as long as it has the parking break assembly on it?

I'm pretty sure. But it has to be a trans from a 7.3

Is the bolt pattern on the block different between the 6.9 and 7.3? Is that the reason why i need one from a 7.3?

Gasser bolt pattern is def. different. But are you sure the 6.9 and 7.3 are different? They're the same base block, right? And I looked at an '86 the other day with a 6.9 and a transplanted ZF5, and I'm pretty sure he got the tranny from a 7.3 truck.

I stand corrected. The 6.9 and 7.3 both have the same bolt pattern.

Sorry for the confusion

That's what they say, but I don't know anyone who has actually done it. Theoretically, though, it should work.
