I've inherited a half torn apart '53 F-250 and the more I get into it the more I find out that it's not all original. Right now, I'm trying to figure out what rear end is installed on this thing, and it doesn't look like any of the pictures in the shop manual.
The Dana 44 cover bolts can be removed with a 1/2" socket and the Dana 60 cover bolts are 9/16". The Dana 60 also has a Ribbed cover between the bolt centers where the 44 in smooth but with out further investigation by scrapping the tube axle for identification numbers it's really a guess. The factory also sometimes would cast a 60 in rear lower right rear corner of the housing. Have you rotated the axle and counted the pinion turns to axle /wheel Rotation or measured the ring gear?
Just to follow up on what Smitty said and referring to 53 F3's drawing, note item #3, "Model Number" there should be an axle model code cast into the iron in that location. If it says 60, there's your answer.
I haven't checked the ratio yet. That will be my next step, along with cleaning off the tube to check for the numbers. I won't be able to get to it until this weekend though, I travel for work so I'm usually not home during the week. I'll let you all know what I find out this weekend.
I found out tonight that it's a Dana 60. I found a 60 stamped on the lower passenger's side where it should be. I haven't jacked it up to check the ratio yet, but will get to that.
finding the number stamped on the rear side of the tube can be difficult, it's usually on the right side viewed from the rear. i found using fine sand paper works pretty good. it will clean high spots allow number to be read.
i tried to find a picture of a dana ring gear to show the numbers, but only thing i have on my computor rifht now is this ford 8.8 i have, but it shows how the number/letters are stamped clearly.
any dana will have the year made "7 25 82" and the gear ratio "41-10" (which is 4.10 ratio) among other numbers.
if you take a picture once cover is off, i'll be able to tell you if it's a limited-slip, open diff. etc.....
I say the same as Smitty that it is a 44. In your third photo you can see the 44 cast into the housing. The number is cast, not stamped into the center section. Here is another site to help you. Axle Identification Chart
Truckee, check out this picture, it shows a 60 right in the lower passenger's side, right where the diagram that 52'F-3 uploaded says the model number should be. And yes, it is actually cast in there, I said stamped but meant cast.
I also did a little more digging on the tube and found a few numbers, but not all that I think were once there. The numbers I found are
6 5 7A 2196
I guess I'll have to take the cover off to get all the numbers. I may be able to do it tomorrow, but it might not be until next weekend.
