question about heads

I have a 88 f250 with a 7.3l idi. The question is, is the heads from a 6.9l the same as my 7.3l ? will they interchange?

They don't interchange. The 6.9 has smaller head bolts.

Phy,

Are you sure? I thought I heard that all IDI heads are the same. I just had mine rebuilt and the head shop cross referenced the same heads for both motors, but that is no guarantee! It is true that the block has different thread size on the 6.9 (7/16") vs the 7.3 (1/2") but that doesn't mean that the heads are different, the bolt holes on the 7.3 head are definitely big enough to accommodate a bigger bolt, if the 6.9's are also that would mean that a 1/2" bolt should fit through. I am not certain, but I do know that the 7.3 valve train will bolt into the 6.9 head.

I am sure that someone will set me straight.

Thought some coolant passages were different too? Here is a 7.3 bolt vs 6.9

So the length in itself would be a problem, I know for sure that all 17 7.3 head bolts are the same length, so I would think that I am wrong here.

Thanks Dirty, BTE good news on my cavitation "non" issue, I am about to write up the story in my head gasket repair thread. It's a million yucks!
