i got a 1986 f250 6.9l and Im trying to find better heads for the motor or some how make the heads stronger. Do you know where to find preformace heads for a 6.9?
The stock heads are plenty strong, 87 6.9 heads were the best because they use the same valve train as a 7.3, 83 used a different precup other than that they are all the same and plenty strong.
If your blowing head gaskets then you need head studs
I'm not aware of any head breakage epidemic. Precups crack from heat, but cracks are OK to run so long as they're not past the fire ring. The only difference from 6.9 to 7.3 heads is the head bolt hole size, and possibly length of the lower head bolt bosses. 7.3 heads had plugs in some coolant passages, some people drill them or remove the plugs entirely. Not sure what the advantage of one way or the other is.
I bought from these guys. It was $550 per head, and they came fully dressed. My local shop said NO ONE could beat that price for a complete set of heads. so far, they are still going strong.
