I just purchased a 93' Ranger extra cab, 2wd, 4.0 engine and auto transmission, 120,000 miles, very nice shape. My question is can I use Mercon V in the tranny. Thanks for any advise.
That is good news, thanks, & I think I will install a tranny cooler also. This truck runs extremly strong with the 4.0 motor.
If it has the "tow package" it likely already has a tranny cooler, along with the power steering cooler, in front of the AC condensser.
If not & you want to add one, consider adding a flat plate cooler, as its efficient & compact in design, to fit in limited space & still get the job done. If you live in cold country, maybe opt for a temp controlled cooler, so you don't over cool in winter.
Thanks, I installed one just like this on my EXplorer; I will check up front to see if the Ranger has one. The AC is the only thing not working on this truck, but I will figure that one out. Need that here in rural Arizona.
Roger on needing a tranny cooler in Az!!!! I was in Phoenix once back in the late 90's in Aug, when it hit 122 at noon & set a record. Was 113 when I got to the airport at 11 PM the night before, was the hottest weather I'd ever been in. The thing I remember most was that the heat instantly touched every part of your body, right through your clothes.
Even if you have a factory trans cooler with the tow package, you should replace it with a better one. The stock one is pretty marginal, actually pathetic is a better word. B&M is a popular replacement choice because the stacked plate design allows better efficiency in a small package, so you get better cooling for any given size cooler.
