E4OD problem

Had my e4od rebuilt. I removed and installed it. It an f250 diesel extra cab 1990 4x4. When I put it in drive, it goes into third gear. To get it in first gear, I have to manually shift it to first. And shift it to second and third. No Od. Installed new mlp switch. Replaced bad tach senser. Ran codes. 23. Tps senser. Replaced that too. Ran code. Still get 23 with new tps. NOW What. Vss? What else would cause it to not shift to to first when you put it to drive. Also won't drop to first when I come to a stop sign. Thanks for any suggestions.

I did that when I installed it. I will recheck the alignment. It does start in park and neutral, though. Thanks

make sure your shift solenoids are getting power.
on the pass side of the trans is a plug.inspect this one.any bare wires showing? if so,replace this plug.if not, pull, clean and apply dielectric grease and see how that goes.
if still no luck, make sure the ecm relay is good under the hood.

I also read on another thread that you have to have the accelerator pedal to the floor or you will get a 23 code when running scanner. So I did that and re-ran codes. 23 went away. So I probably changed the tps for no reason.

yeah the TPS controls the shift points/schedule.your issue is something isn't getting power.
that's a ware sensor anyway.every 50k miles replacing is ideal,so harm done there.just make sure it's set to 1.2V idle/4.5 WOT.

when you installed the new MLPS,what part # did you use,and did it just plug right in,or did you have to re-pin? if you re-pinned to the latter style, did you do so correctly?
when was this replaced, and why? because of this reason,or you swapped this out back along sometime, and then it ran fine, but now just started doing this?

Yep. That's what the tranny guy says. I just need to know what wire provides power to sol. pack so I can start tracing it down. Any suggestions on where to get a wiring diagram. Thanks.

post #5 explains the place to start (most common.)
many guys have found this plug in such a bad state of disrepair,it's a wonder the trans worked at all for 'em.

example:

just in case, you find something like that:
http://www.transmissionpartsusa.com/...-00026389a.htm

often it just needs to be pulled, cleaned with brake cleaner, lubed up real good with dielectric grease (if the wires going into plug look fine of course.)

I replaced the mlp sw to the new style two days ago and had to re-pin it. I was very careful to install the wires in the correct position. It was old and a shot in the dark was why I replaced it. I tried to get an oem ford mlp. Had to take it back cuz it was missing parts. Picked one up at a napa in Sacramento. Ca and followed directions.
Napa/echlin mlp part # ns6528
Where is the best location to check for the voltage on the tps?

so the problem was there before the MLPS swap.well sounds like you'll be good there.hopefully it's as easy as just cleaning up the pack plug and away she goes.

you have no power on the red wires at the solenoid.
when they are off due to no power the trans will always start off in 4th gear in drive and when manually shifting either to manual 2 or low it will always be in 2nd gear

Thanks. The picture did not come thru when I read the post. The sol pack harness plug looks just like the one you posted. I will change that now.

Installed new solenoid pack harness. This did not help. And yes. I am getting 12volts to the red wire with key on engine off. And with key on engine on. If I check voltage between pin 11 and 12 the voltage jumps all over from 4 to 10 volts. But if I check from pin 12 to a good ground, I get 12 volts.

Where is the ECM relay located under the hood? I am getting 12 volts to the solenoid pack and from the .
