the mysterious knocking.
My truck has started this knocking sounds the last few days. it's been getting a little worse, so I need help. And here are the specifics:
It happens all the time EXCEPT when I am braking.
It is NOT timed with RPMs
It is NOT timed with speed/transmission
The only thing it seems to be timed with is the battery light which is flickering in time with the ticking/knocking. But that isn't quite accurate either because when I feed it throttle the light goes out, but the ticking/knocking is still there.
I checked the oil, and it was at the bottom of the checks (empty) so I put some in and filled it. But this had ZERO effect on the knocking.
From the inside it sounded like a squeaking or screeching but outside and under the truck it is a fairly loud metallic knocking.
Good luck! I have worked on my own cars/trucks for years and this one has got me stumped.
I asked that because of your had mention the battery light flickering in time with the ticking/knocking.
Giving it little gas causes light to go out = spins alt little faster belt gets little better bite.
"Not timed with rpms" effects that somewhat though, and the not under braking part..... well "manual" or "auto" trans? If manual allowed to simply idle when stopping or down shifting?
I'll check that out. It's a manual. It's when I am braking while it's idling that the noise goes away. But as soon as I roll to a stop it starts the ticking again. when I downshift it ticks the whole time. ONLY when I'm braking while the engine is idling does the noise go away.
