This may be a stupid question, But it sure beats doing the job over again........Measure twice - cut once Right?
Will my reg green coolant work with the new cup sealant?
I know ELC and E99 cup sealant didn't work well together. So just want to make sure Regular coolant doesn't have the same effect with the new sealant.
My coolant is pretty new, and I keep up with the PH, so I just hate to throw it out if I don't have to. I'm replacing cups, injectors, rebuilding my oil cooler, and replacing front wheel bearings over the next week, So my budget is stretched pretty thin as it is.
I wouldn't pull the cups unless you are planning on running ELC (since you have an e99...). In my opinion there is no reason to change the cups unless you have a problem.
BTW....
I purchased some Zerex ELC from NAPA for $12.60 a gallon. So it's really not terribly expensive any longer. I tested it out last weekend and it does seem to cool better than the conventional green. I had overheating issues in June. I then pulled the radiator and had it cleaned and towed the same mountains in July and it ran much cooler but still ran a little warm on the large grades. I then switched to ELC and pulled the same mountains with a heavier load and engine temps were well within range.
I was one of those guys that ran green coolant for years and years and simply monitored the SCAs as required. Now I am dealing with radiators that have 20%-30% internal blockages due to drop out. It's not really that noticeable unless you are towing but I can tell that my cooling systems aren't as efficient as they once were. I'll be switching my other trucks to ELC soon (since it's so reasonably priced...). My plan is to pull the radiators and drop them off at the shop to get tested. The shop will pull the tanks, clean the core and then re-assemble with new o-rings. Then I'll flush the block and heater core and refill with ELC. Should do the trick.

Reason: updated info pertaining to e99 engines...
Why the hell are you doing cups if you do not have an issue?
There is no reason in the world to even touch the cups if there not leaking or cracked, your opening up a whole can of worms for nothing.
Cups are not a "maintance" item. If there not broke, dont touch them.
I wish someone would have told me that before I ordered them... I just figured that after 281,000 miles it might be a good idea to do while my injectors were out
Well my cups and the tool will be here today or tomorrow, And I've already paid for the tool rental.
I can honestly say that I don't really want to do the cups, nor do I want to end up screwing something up.
I'm on a fence here, someone push me one way or the other...
Edit: Thanks for the input Joe & Greg I'll put them on the shelf, return the tool and have a much better weekend....

Are you ever planning on switching to ELC? If so, then you might as well change the cups while you have the injectors out. Did you get the tool from Angelofishes (or similar) or do you have the tool that requires the removal of the rocker arms?
I agree I would not do them unless you have a problem. I have done them and they can be a PITA. You can cause more problems doing them. Just run whatever coolant is compatible with what you have and return the cups.
However if you are getting diesel in the coolant, then it would warrant doing the cups.

No, I wasn't planning on switching coolant. I thought doing the cups would fall under "preventative maintenance"
I ordered the cups and tool from Clay. The rockers do not have to be removed.

10-4
In that case I'd see about returning the items if possible.
Frank for some reason the thought of you doing injector cups scares me... maybe because you don't have very good luck under the valve.lol..Congrats on the new injectors.

You know me well Grant... My chances of screwing something up increases when I try to fix something that hasn't broke yet.
I'm sure once I'm many miles from home on my next job site, I'll find fuel in my coolant. That's just my luck....
Good to see you still around my friend.

A week ago, I would have bought the cups from you, after I messed up the first install. Too late though, my new ones are buttoned up and confirmed leak-free.
But I second it (or "third" it), don't do the cups unless you have to!
