High EOT

Everyone,
2003 F350 crew cab
199XXX miles

I know this is much discussed topic, but I didn't want to hijack a recent thread and had to start a thread. I've been doing tons of research on what is needed to being my EOT values back to stock specs.

I just recently added a scangaugeII and been monitoring different gauges. I noticed on a road trip this past weekend my EOT was 240ish and ECT was 190ish unloaded. From my research it seems at this point a flush wouldn't really help this issue based on the high miles. I really need this truck to last me another 100+ miles.

Would everyone agree one changing the oil cooler and EGR cooler to help solve my high EOT issues? Can I use the same part numbers as Tr0y in his recent thread "oil cooler and EGR cooler R/R parts list?"

Do you have to keep the EGR cooler?

You'll need to flush the system, drain it and then do the cooler r&r.

Use Rotella or equivalent ELC coolant too.

Yeah I have to keep the EGR. Well.... I can use my sisters address to register my truck she doesn't have emissions where she lives
in north Arizona

So I do the flush first then start tearing it apart to replace everything

YES, most definately flush first, otherwise you risk plugging up the new cooler. Get the nasty out now, before it has a chance to clog the new EOC.

What would you guys consider high EOT (while maintaining 15* delta) when towing?

Your 2003 OEM EGR cooler is pretty reliable - not many fail.

Like Mark said keep the EGR cooler you won't have any problem with it . And were your temps towing or empty ? Towing you could see temps like that .

Just a thought, have you looked at your temps. after a cold soak ? I would make sure the temp readings were accurate before tearing into it. Might be as simple as a bad EOT sensor ? I know it's doubtful but worth checking before you throw money at it none the less.

I've also heard of people blocking off the exhaust inlet and outlet ports on their EGR cooler by having plugs welded in and reinstalling the cooler, that way it will pass a visual inspection and you can leave the EGR valve in place and operational. That would also prevent the EGR cooler from ever sending coolant to the intake and ultimately to the combustion chamber.

Aside from anything else, you can have just a too high oil temperature... 220 is high, regardless of what the truck is doing, 225 is as high as I would go with regular oil. 240 is risking damage with regular oil and very high with synthetic. I have been told the later flashes start to de-power the engine at temps around 230 - 240.

The derate is at 253 oil temp. Anything over 235 (or 236) is a problem in my mind. If the oil is that hot then the coolant is over the 221 max (also a point at which the PCM derates the engine) or you have a delta of 15 degrees (or greater) between the coolant and oil and that indicates a plugging oil cooler.

I've hit 224 ect and 240 eot for a short period of time coming out of Bishop towing the 31' fiver. Ambient pushing 100 on the 12 mile 6 degree grade. Grabbed a lower gear and she dropped temp. Everything is relevant if the cooling system is up to snuff.

Run over to Mesa and get the BDP egr cooler. You dont need to mess with removing it or bypassing it. Every time I go to emissions here in Phoenix, they spend a lot of time under the hood.

I was unloaded and this was/is just normal freeway driving.

It was after a cold soak. It wasn't a 12 hour cold soak more like 8-9 hours. This is my daily driver right now and the temp spike after spending some time on the freeway driving home.
