This is my first time using a forum, so please excuse any miscues on my part.
I am having trouble with my 2000 Excursion 7.3. It died on my wife this morning, but it started right back up and made it home(4 miles). Figured it was the CPS but when i went to hook up the code reader, it just kept saying that i needed to connect it to the vehicle first. I verified that the reader was working on both my other vehicles. Then had to go to work.
Has anyone experienced something like this? I wondering if my ECM is going bad? Any help woud be greatly appreciated.
An ordinary code reader will not communicate with the 7.3L diesel, especially not the ones that can be rented at auto parts stores like Autozone and such.
Thanks for the heads up on the fuse being linked. Checked it this morning and it was blown. Switched it with the brake circuit fuse to verify and the code reader worked normally and it did! No fault codes found on engine other than the glow plugs on 2,4,6 and 8 are not working, but not related to the engine quiting like it did yesterday. I went and drained the fuel/ water filter and plan to run it and see if it does it again. Did not see any signs of water.

So how did your scanner power up then?
No fuse, no power. Yet you said the reader powered up and said it needed to connect to a vehicle.
Not sure, but just assumed that the reader has its own internal power and was not detecting a signal through the OBDII plug. I will verify that it powers up on its own when I get home. Will also provide you with the make and model if you'd like? In the mean time it looks like I'm going to have to troubleshoot the glow plug relay or controls to find out why one bank is not working, could just be a connector.
I just found that, after using 4 different models and having the same results, and having the same outcome corroborated by others who have posted the same thing on the different boards, that a scanner will not turn on without power.
