Hi guys I got an 86 bronco 4.9l 4spd 4x4 and a couple months ago i their was an even(trucks gone wild) up in bark river Michigan, so i drove my bronco up their which was about 100miles to drive and when i was running the mud pit I stopped and decided to add 1qt of oil and the next day when we left I decided to check the oil and the truck took 3 more quarts so basically I drove that 100miles and did high RPMs in the mud pit on just 1quart of oil, and on the way back to green bay my truck died about 50miles after I left and had to tow it home
. Turns out the distriutor gear got chewed up and endided up getting a new distributor, I got the time set but the only problem I'm having is the truck keeps dieing when I come up to a corner and slow down, it sounds like an eratic idle like it wants to die then it gets back up idleing again, Im thinking it might be a bad float or something with the Carb. But I rebuilt the Carb.
Do u think the timing is causing the truck to die or a bad Carb? When i go to start it sometimes it back fires but that's only once in a while.
The float in the 1bbl carb can be finicky. I used to have problems with mine after I'd off-road. A simple washboard road and I'd have to disassemble the carb and recheck the float settings. If I didn't, it'd idle really rough and would die at stop lights, just like yours. Also, recheck the heights and settings on the metering rod.
However, were you having the idling problem at all before your distributor went south? How did you set your timing?
No the truck idled fine, I got the timing set just by hand right now, just that I haven't been able to set it with the light because the idle was rough. Now I have the time I was going to try and set it with the light. I might just buy a rebuilt Carb cause the one on their isn't the right one just that I got it to run decent for a little while... I did get a 2-1barrel adapter, but its a GM 2 barrel I got from the junkyard which I can't get to run cause I can't get the gas to flow right into the intake
It might not flow because of the GM part of it.. Maybe look for a 2bbl? I have a Motorcraft one i pulled off my 78 bronco recently to swap in a Carter AFB and an Edelbrock performer 400 intake. I was going to rebuild the 2bbl and put it on while i rebuilt the 4bbl but from the looks of it currently that isn't going to happen. Maybe it could go to someone like you?

what kind of 2 barrel is it, One that is a square mounting on the manifold?
the adapter i bought is a rectangular mounting face for
the 2 barrel. maybe i can take it off ur hands if the price is right.

It is a stock 78 Motorcraft 2bbl. I am not sure on what you mean by the mounting plate, so i will post some pics from the swap.
This is the old intake.
Thats what i have. Anyways, i pulled it off because i wanted the 2 extra barrels for the power, and this 2 bbl was for some reason not tuning. I figured a rebuild was needed but since i have no idea how to do that nor did i have the money for the rebuild kit. It now sits under the workbench in my garage. The intake is currently gone to the scrap yard since it was in bad condition.
Anyways, i am not sure on how much shipping would be nor do i know where you live. I would have to get that info then i can factor in a price for it. Plus i have to pull out the carb and make sure all the screws are there and there won't be many missing parts. As far as i know the choke linkage is gone and the spring for the throttle to the intake is now on the 4bbl i have. I can get some more pics for ya if you want.
It has 1 missing linkage from the choke thermostat to the choke lever, and it is missing the screws to hold the choke thermostat housing on. I had to use them to secure the one on my 4bbl. I guess let me know in a PM if you want it.
GJ, seeing that pic of your '78 2 barrel, reminded me of the 2 barrel on my long long gone early 60's 289 Galaxie. From Rockauto, here's a pic of it. The '78 has a vacuum choke pulloff, and no open bowl vents anymore due to emissions. But otherwise, it looks the same.
Wow look at that, there about the same haha. Yeah this one is a Motorcraft 2150, I took it to a fellow FTEr who thought he could get it running like a sewing machine. Since i am not tuning expert, i have no idea what went wrong but it ran pretty crappy.. Then i got this Carter 4bbl on and my brother tuned it and now it has been running good ever since. A few idle adjustments here and there to get it to stay running when cold but otherwise it's great.
