driveability issues in 86 bronco... HELP'!

i just picked up my first bronco, it's an 86 with a 351w HO motor. it had been sitting for close to 4 years. we dumped some fresh gas in it, drove it onto the trailer in NY. trailered it back to OH, it would start with a splash of gas into the carb, noticed the carb was leaking from the accelerator pump. i drove it about 7 miles from my friend's house to mine, stalled one time and restarted immediately. i pulled the carb and a local rod shop rebuilt it for me and i reinstalled it, wouldn't start. replaced fuel pump, it will start now with some throttle. it will not idle, it will rev up and hold RPM, occasionally it will backfire through the carb while trying to start. the timing was not altered from the time it ran fine to now. i know next to nothing about carbs, a decent bit about efi, but i'm eager to learn (sorta have to, don't i??)...

sittin here with open mind and ears, educate me!

what possibly might have happened is that the timing is set too retarded. Possibly the truck ran with the old timing since the carb wasnt really working well and you were probably running out the stale gas that was still in the line. Now that the carb is tuned up and the gas is fresh, you probably have to set the timing. I am not an expert on how to set timing and i dont want to give you any misinformation, but im sure someone that knows will help you out.

wouldn't it be too advanced if it's shooting flames out the carb? that would mean it's sparking while the intake valve is still open, right?

Well, the way i always set timing if i didnt have a light was that i would start with a base measurement. Then, if it backfired out the carb, then the timing was not advanced enough. If it kicked back against the starter, then the timing was too advqanced. I just did this with my tractor with the points. Again, im not an expert, but that usually works.
