Turned my 351m into a 400 (just used 400 crank and pistons) got some 9.3 to one pistons from , better cam, good intake and carb. Wow what a torque monster, couldn't be happier. If you want to keep your original block I would build it into a 400. On the other hand 460s are pretty awesome. Either way it will be a great improvement over a stock 351m. Good luck to you.

Yea, I think I am going to go get it if it's clean. He said it ran before he pulled it.

.

best bang for your buck upgrade for your new to be acquired 460 do a port and polish job all it costs is your own time 9quite a bit of it) and dremel tool with assortment of tips and you can make those stock heads perform good or maybe find some d0ve heads and headers free up quite a few ponies too good luck and happy building

IF I don't decide to get the 460, what would be some things to do to build up my 351M? I guess new crank and pistons to make it a 400. I would also put on some new heads, intake, cam, etc? I mainly just want it to sound good with a decent rough idle. Not looking to run any races and I doubt the truck will ever go over 65mph. I really dont need a 460 haha

basic things like an rv cam and some head work (i am a huge fan of port and polish) to get the air in and some good headers to get the air out will help almost any motor out there just by doing that and getting a good aluminum single plane intake will bring that 351m to life but in all actuality if you would be wanting to do all that AND throw a new crank and pistons in it you would of thrown enough money at it to have built up 2 460's.... 351m performance parts are harder to find and normally more expensive a 460 makes same gas mileage or better and has more stock power than a built up 351m or 400 it is all up to you in the long run i have had lots of motors and when you've had a 460 you never wanna touch a 351m or 400 again every one of them i have seen are doggy and will last forever when left stock(i have only seen one blow up) because they don't really have enough power to hurt themselves without you being stupid but they use twice the gas to get 1/2 the work done that a 460 does just my opinion though

My dad had his old 351 stroked to 400 then bored 30 over, high comp pistons, racing cam, and de-smogged it. Thing ran like a beast. We had that mated to a T18, and it was hard to find something it couldn't pull out. Sounded awesome too. We kept the stock heads and intake, and put an electric choke on

Unfortunately, I have no idea what any of the specs were. The engine was built up in 2001, and I was 5 at the time.

It's pretty easy to wake these engines up. And simple. Shouldn't cost you too much either

Just can't decide. The truck is a street queen, so i just want an aggressive sound. Don't care about what kind of MPG I get. Just trying to see what would be the least amount of trouble. I want the 460 because it is just an awesome motor and I could put it on an engine stand and build it the right way. I also want to keep my 351M because I really don't need anything bigger. I think I could put a cam, bore it 30 over, put some new pistons and a 400 crank in it and be happy. Then again, I could be a SWEET 460, have it all ported and polished and replace everything in it and have a ridiculous motor about 3 years from now. I just dont know.

I think just changing the crank, pistons, and cam would be all I need. I will probably pull the motor. Clean it all. Repaint it. Put some chrome on her and put her back in. Motor runs too good to get rid of it. I would rather put my money into my Mustang than on a 460 I believe.

And hey, 3 different guys replied so far with the same ansewer, put in a 460 and dump the pig.

The 4x4 towers that the 351M-400 use work. All you need are the motor mounts. I've tryed L&L's and was thinking of replacing them with Trans-Dapt but then I found West Coast Bronco's mounts. They are with out a doubt the best mount out there. No vulcanized rubber b.s. to separate & they fit like a glove. They use a poly bushing with a through bolt, check them out.

when i put my 460 in red dog i used stock 390 motor mounts about $15 each instead of $50-75 (wish i had a picture to show you) turned with one corner cut off and slightly enlarge bottom bolt hole and it save you quite a bit of money and they are just as strong i used the 351m towers just had to un bolt and move forward a little and drill some new bolt holes.....but i believe Keith wants to keep his old motor now and rebuild it into a warm/hot 400
